Binghamton (NY) HoopsFest

BINGHAMTON, NY -- Senior forward Mike Pegues recorded game-highs of 29 points and 14 rebounds and the University of Delaware used its prowess at the foul line to its advantage in an 81-74 men's basketball victory over Canisius in the second round of the Binghamton HoopFest Sunday night at the Broome County Arena.

The Blue Hens improved to 2-0 with their 12th straight regular season victory as Kestutis Marciulionis added 21 points, Billy Wells added 15 points and seven assists, and Greg Miller chipped in with 10 points.

Canisius, which had dropped its season opener Saturday to Marshall in Binghamton, fell to 0-2 despite 22 points and 11 rebounds from center Darren Fenn.

Delaware led from start to finish, going up by as much as 17 points early on at 39-22. But the Golden Griffins recovered and used a 7-0 run to end the first half to go into halftime down 39-29. Canisius scored the first four point of the second stanza to cut the lead to 39-33 but never got closer than six points the rest of the night.

The Blue Hens, who have shot better than 70 percent each of the last four seasons, hit on 26 of 38 shots from the line for the game, including 12 of 17 in the final three minutes. Pegues, who played all 40 minutes for the second straight night, hit on 9 of 12 from the line while Marciulionis was 12 of 16.

Canisius guard Dorian McClure (10 points) hit a three-pointer with 40 seconds left to play to cut the lead to 76-70, but the Hens never allowed them to get closer as they hit their free throws down the stretch.

Delaware, which returns home Tuesday for the 1999-2000 home opener vs. defending Colonial Athletic Association champion George Mason, has now won 26 straight games when scoring 80 or more points.
