Pegues, Marciulionis Lead Blue Hen Comeback

PHILADELPHIAMike Pegues converted a three-point play off a rebound with 35 seconds left to play to complete a 13-point comeback as the University of Delaware posted a wild 69-65 America East men’s basketball win over host Drexel Friday night at the Physical Education Athletic Center.

The Blue Hens, who trailed 50-37 with 12:39 left to play, rallied with a 13-1 run and gained the lead for the first time when Kestutis Marciulionis hit two free throws with 1:29 left to play.

The win upped Delaware’s record to 16-5 and kept the Hens in sole possession of third place in the league standings with an 8-3 mark. Drexel, which lost to Delaware for the seventh straight time, had a two-game win streak snapped and fell to 9-12, 6-5. Junior forward Mike Kouser led the Dragon effort with 20 points and nine rebounds.

Pegues, the 1999 America East Player of the Year, scored 15 of his game-high 25 points in the first half and also finished with a team-high nine rebounds. Marciulionis came off the bench for the first time this season and deposited 17 of his 19 points in the second stanza. Darryl Presley also led the Delaware effort with 10 points off the bench.

Forward Chris Burch added 13 points and Stephen Starks chipped in with 10 points to lead the Dragons.

Delaware, coming off a 1 for 25 three-point shooting performance in a loss to Maine Saturday, connected on 7 of 20 shots from three-point range vs. Drexel, hitting three straight treys as part of the 13-1 run that brought the Hens back.

Drexel led 35-28 at halftime and built that lead to 50-37 with 12:29 left. But the Hens countered with the 13-1 run as John Gordon (team-high seven assists), Marciulionis, and Billy Wells all nailed three pointers. Marciulionis gave UD its first lead of the second half at 64-63 with two free throws with 1:29 left to play.

The Dragons came right back to go up 65-64 on a Starks drive with 1:03 left. But the Hens went up for good with 35 seconds remaining when Pegues grabbed a missed Marciulionis layup, scored, and was fouled. He nailed the free throw to put the Hens up 67-65.

Drexel’s Kouser then missed a jumper under pressure in the lane with 12 seconds left and Marciulionis was fouled on the rebound. He hit both free throws to ice the game. The Hens converted 16 of 18 from the line for the game.

The tight game was typical of the Hens’ oldest rivalry which continued for the 119th time Friday night. Of those 119 games, the win margin has been nine points or less 69 times.
