Delaware 86, Duquesne 81
November 20, 1999

BINGHAMTON, NY - It was another successful season opener for head coach Mike Brey and the University of Delaware men's basketball team as the Blue Hens opened the 1999-2000 season with an 86-81 victory over Duquesne in the opening game of the Binghamton Hoops Fest at Broome County Arena.

Senior forward All-American candidate Mike Pegues, the 1999 America East Player of the Year, led four scorers in doubles figures with 25 points and Kestutis Marciulionis added 18 points to lead the Blue Hens to their fifth straight season opening win. Duquesne, a member of the Atlantic 10 Conference, got 30 points from forward Wayne Smith. Pegues moved into sixth place on the all-time UD scoring list with his outing.

The Hens, who will face Canisius in the second and final round Sunday evening, defeated an Atlantic 10 opponent for the first time since a 77-69 win over Rutgers in 1992-93.

The Blue Hens, who led 37-32 at halftime, finally pulled away from the Dukes in the final minutes of a game that Delaware never led by more than nine points. Junior guard Billy Wells, a first-year transfer from Tulane, broke a 72-72 tie with a basket with 1:47 left to play and the Hens nailed seven of eight free throws down the stretch for the victory.

Senior forward Darryl Presley, playing his first game after a year's absence from the team, added 14 points and six rebounds, Greg Miller had 13 points, and Wells added nine points and five assists to lead the Blue Hens, who shot 54 percent from the field (30 of 55), 47 percent from the three-point line (9 of 19), and 81 percent from the foul line (17 of 21).

Duquesne also got 15 points and six rebounds from Courtney Wallace and 14 points from Shawn Tann.
