Delaware 80, George Mason 78

November 23, 1999

NEWARK, DE -- Senior forward Mike Pegues scored a game-high 24 points and guard Billy Wells added 22 points as the University of Delaware held off George Mason 80-78 in a men's basketball battle between defending conference champions Tuesday night at the Bob Carpenter Center.

Pegues, the 1999 America East Player of the Year, hit on 10 of 13 shots from the field for his fourth straight 20-point plus game and 28th of his career, as the Blue Hens improved to 3-0 and won their 13th straight regular season game.

George Mason, the defending Colonial Athletic Association champion, fell to 0-2 despite 22 points and eight rebounds from 1999 CAA Player of the Year George Evans and 21 points from forward Erik Herring.

George Mason never had the lead the entire game but did tie the score twice, the second time at 51-51 with 10:43 left to play. The Hens never led by more than six points the final two minutes with the Patriots cutting the lead to 79-78 with eight seconds left to play on a dunk by Jon Larranaga.

But Wells, a first-year junior transfer from Tulane, connected on one free throw to put the Hens up 80-78. A shot by George Mason's Tyrone Tiggs at the top of the key never reached the basket as time expired.

Delaware forward Darryl Presley added 10 points and seven rebounds for the Blue Hens but left the game in the final minute after hitting his head on the floor after a collision with Evans. Presley got up but collapsed seconds later. He never lost consciousness and was helped off the floor five minutes later. He was taken to nearby Christiana Hospital as a precaution but appeared not to have suffered a concussion.
