Marciulionis Bombs Away for 23 Points, Sets UD Three-Point Record in Romp

 

WEST HARTFORD, CT - Senior guard Kestutis Marciulionis fired away for a game-high 23 points and became the University of Delaware's all-time three-point leader as the Blue Hens cruised past host Hartford 89-61 in an America East men's basketball game Saturday night at the Chase Family Arena.

The two-time defending America East champion Blue Hens (22-6, 14-4) won their sixth straight game to close out the regular season in third place in the America East standings. Hartford shot just 33 percent from the field and finished the regular season 9-18, 6-12.

Delaware will be the No. 3 seed and take on No. 6 Towson in the America East quarterfinals next Saturday at 8 p.m. at the Bob Carpenter Center. Hartford will be either the No. 7 or No. 8 seed and will play Friday night at either 6 or 8 p.m. at the BCC. Complete tournament pairings will be announced Sunday afternoon.

The Hens used two big runs to start each half on the way to their first league road sweep of the season. Delaware, which downed Vermont Thursday night, opened the game with a 17-4 run vs. Hartford and eventually led by as much as 21 points in the opening stanza. Delaware then used a 17-3 run to the start the second half to go up 63-34 and the rout was on.

John Gordon added 21 points, including five three-pointers, Mike Pegues had 17 points in his UD record tying 119th career game, and Billy Wells chipped in with 13 points for the Hens. Delaware shot 53 percent from the field (32 of 60) and converted 11 three-pointers to up the team season total to 213, breaking the school record of 207 set last year. Gordon hit a three-pointer for the 16th straight game.

Marciulionis, a senior from Kaunas, Lithuania and Richmond, VA (Hargrave MA/Huguenot MA), converted four three-pointers to reach 204 for his career, two more than Peca Arsic in 1995-98. He also collected five assists and six steals on the night.

Hartford freshman Josh Odugbela posted his first career double-double with 15 points and 12 rebounds while guard Darrick Jackson added 13 points. The Hawks hit just 21 of 64 shots from the field (.328) but did hold a 49-34 advantage on the boards, including 22 on the offensive glass.
