America East Men's Basketball Championship

Hofstra 76, Delaware 69
March 11, 2000

HEMPSTEAD, NY -- The University of Delaware's hopes for a third straight America East title and NCAA Tournament berth were dashed Saturday afternoon as No. 1 seed Hofstra won its first ever America East men's basketball title with a 76-69 victory over the Blue Hens before a sellout crowd at Hofstra Arena.

The Blue Hens (24-7), the two-time defending America East champions and the No. 3 seed, led by eight points early in the second before giving way to the Dutchmen (24-6), who are headed to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 1977. Delaware, which had won eight straight games since a loss at Hofstra in February, will await a berth into the 32-team National Invitational Tournament field which will be announced Sunday night following the NCAA pairings announcement.

Hofstra won its seventh straight game and extended the nation's third longest home winning streak to 26 games. The game was played before a national ESPN television audience.

Two-time America East Player of the Year Craig Claxton led Hofstra with 24 points and eight assists and Norman Richardson scored a game-high 26 points to lead the way.

Delaware's Mike Pegues led four players in double figures with 19 points before fouling out with 3:36 left and the score tied at 66-66. Pegues, a three-time first team All-America East selection, went over the 2,000 career point mark in the second half, becoming the first player in UD history and just the sixth in America East history to reach that plateau. Pegues added nine rebounds while Kestutis Marciulionis scored 14 points, Billy Wells netted 13, and John Gordon scored 12 points despite hitting just 2 of 12 field goals for the game, including 1 for 10 from the three-point line.

Delaware took a 35-33 halftime lead and gained their biggest advantage at 49-41 with 14:00 minutes left to play.

The Flying Dutchmen got a big break when Pegues fouled out with 3:36 left to play and the score tied 66-66. Roberto Gittens hit one free throw following the Pegues foul to put the Dutchmen up 67-66. Gordon had the chance to put the Hens ahead but his three-pointer missed and Hofstra gained the rebound. Richardson was fouled on the rebound and made one free throw to put Hofstra up 68-66 with 2:04 left.

The Hens again had the chance to take the lead when Wells was fouled on a three-point attempt but he could make just one shot, cutting the Dutchmen lead to 68-67 with 1:49 remaining. Claxton then took over for Hofstra, converting a layup 14 seconds later then dishing an assist to Danny Walker for layup to lift Hofstra to a 72-67 lead with 47 seconds left.

Claxton was named tournament Most Valuable Player and was joined by Richardson, Delaware's Pegues and Wells, and Maine's Nate Fox.
