Delaware Rallies To
Down Hofstra 85-81 in Men's
Basketball
NEWARK, DE -- Senior John
Gordon, playing his first home game of the season,
scored 24 points, including six three-pointers, and senior
forward Madou Diouf stepped to the forefront and
added a career-high 14 points as the University of Delaware
overcame foul trouble to post a thrilling 85-81 America East
victory over Hofstra in a battle of league pre-season
favorites Sunday afternoon at the Bob Carpenter
Center.
Delaware (11-3, 3-1 America East) won its
second straight and extended its home winning streak to 14
games while Hofstra (7-5, 2- 1) had a four-game win streak
snapped despite senior guard Craig Claxton netting his third
30-point game of the season with 31 points. Claxton
connected on 16 of 18 free throws and also dished out five
assists.
Hofstra, which also got 15 points from
forward Norman Richardson and 12 from guard Jason Hernandez,
dropped its eighth straight game at Delaware.
Senior guard Kestutis Marciulionis
scored 18 points, including his 1,000th career point, and
Mike Pegues added 11 points and pulled eight rebounds
before fouling out with 10:07 left to play.
Hofstra led by as much as 10 points in
the first half on the way to a 34-30 cushion at
intermission, taking advantage of a seven-minute scoring
drought. Hofstra led the entire second half before the Hens
tied the game at 51-51 with 11:55 left.
But Hofstra went back up by seven points
at 59-52 with 10:07 left. Delaware clawed back again and
took the lead for good at 67-66 with 5:59 left on a
three-pointer by Gordon. Hofstra cut the lead to 82- 80 on a
deep three-pointer by Rick Apodaca with 21 seconds left, but
Diouf hit a free throw with 18 seconds left and Austen
Rowland nailed two with five seconds left to ice the
game.
The game featured 55 fouls between the
two teams and five players fouled out. Delaware, already
without the services of leading rebounder Darryl
Presley due to a hairline fracture of his tibia, lost
Pegues to fouls with 10:07 left and 7-1 center Ndongo
Ndiaye to fouls 41 seconds later. The 6-5 Diouf stepped
up and had his best career game, scoring 14 points and
pulling four rebounds.
Gordon, a first team All-America East
selection in 1999, played just his third game of the season
and first at home after missing the first 11 games of the
season due to a foot fracture. Gordon nailed 6 of 11
three-pointers and played 39 points.
