February 6, 2000 Red-Hot Richardson Helps League-leading Hofstra Down Blue Hens
HEMPSTEAD, NY -- Norman Richardson exploded for 22 of his game-high 27 points in the second half as league-leading Hofstra rallied for an 82-70 America East men's basketball victory over the University of Delaware before a sellout crowd of 5,124 at Hofstra Arena Sunday. Richardson connected on five three-pointers, including four in the second half, as Hofstra (16-5, 11-1 America East) avenged an earlier loss to the Blue Hens and won their 22nd consecutive home game. The Blue Hens (16-6, 8-4), who got 25 points and eight rebounds from forward Mike Pegues, lost for the second time in three games as the two-time defending league champions remained in third place in the league standings. "I liked where we were in the first half," said Delaware head coach Mike Brey, whose team lead 31-30 at halftime. "We went up by five in the second half but could just never get over the hump and put them away. Richardson's threes really broke our backs. He was a big-time player when they needed him and that gave them the momentum." Delaware, which also got 16 points off the bench from guard Kestutis Marciulionis, 11 points off the bench from Darryl Presley, and 10 points from John Gordon, shot 52 percent from the field (27 for 52) and were 5 of 11 from the three-point line but were hurt by 21 turnovers. Delaware had won the earlier meeting 86-81 in January in Newark, DE. Hofstra guard Craig Claxton, the league's leading scorer, notched 18 points (14 in the first half) and dished out eight assists while Roberto Gittens chipped in with 13 points and 12 rebounds and Jason Hernandez added 13 points. Hofstra shot 52.6 percent from the field (30 of 57). The Blue Hens, who had won 11 straight games in February dating back to last season, led 31-30 at the half and were up by as much as five points in the second half at 47-42 with 13:18 remaining. Hofstra climbed back but the Hens broke the fifth tie of the game to go up 55-54 with 8:50 left and led 57-56 at the 7:58 mark. But the Flying Dutchmen heated up, outscoring the Blue Hens 20-5 over the next five minutes to put the game away. Richardson and Hernandez did most of the damage during the spurt as they each contributed seven points during the run. The game was played before a sellout crowd of 5,124 at the new Hofstra Arena, which opened in early January and was dedicated on Sunday.
