Storms Past Maine; Will Meet Top Seed Hofstra in Finals
March 11
NEWARK, DE -- The University of
Delaware jumped on Maine early and cruised to a 68-46
victory in the semifinals of the America East Men's
Basketball Tournament Sunday afternoon at the Bob Carpenter
Center.
Senior forward Mike Pegues led the
way once again for the Hens with 21 points and 10 rebounds
and Kestutis Marciulionis chipped in with 14 points
as the Blue Hens (24-6) won their eighth straight game and
earned a berth in the America East title game Saturday,
March 11 vs. top seed Hofstra. The Flying Dutchmen downed
No. 5 Drexel in the other semifinal game.
The Hens, the two-time defending America
East champions, will be making their third straight
appearance in the America East title game. The Hens will
enter the championship riding an eight-game tournament
winning streak. Hofstra is making its first ever America
East championship game appearance.
Maine (24-7), the only team to defeat
Delaware at the Bob Carpenter Center in the last two
seasons, could not complete the season sweep after downing
the Hens 72-68 in Orono, ME Jan. 2 and 71-56 Jan. 29 in
Newark. The Black Bears had handed the Hens their only two
home losses the last two seasons. Delaware also knocked the
Black Bears out of the America East Tournament semifinals
for the second straight year.
Maine could never get its outside
shooting in gear all day, converting just 30 percent of its
shots from the field (17 of 56) and just 5 of 21
three-pointers. Maine hit just 8 of 29 shots in the opening
stanza and fell behind 40-22 at intermission.
Senior center Nate Fox led the Black
Bears with 16 points and eight rebounds, Derrick Jackson
chipped in with 11 points, and Carvell Ammons added 11
rebounds off the bench, including eight on the offensive
end. The Black Bears were hurt by the loss of first team
All-America East point guard Andy Bedard who missed the game
with a fractured wrist suffered in an 80-63 quarterfinal win
over Hartford on Saturday.
Delaware senior forward Madou
Diouf, who fouled out in limited action in Saturday's
79-69 quarterfinal win over Towson, redeemed himself with a
spirited effort. He converted six of seven shots from the
field and finished with 13 points while pulling six
rebounds.
The Hens jumped out quick to a 10-2 lead
but Maine countered and cut the lead to 21-17 with 11:08
left in the first half. Pegues than scored eight points in a
10-0 Delaware explosion that sent the Hens on their way.
Delaware led 40-22 at halftime and led by at least 14 points
the entire second stanza, going up by as much as 27 points
at 49-22 three minutes into the final half.
