ORONO,ME -- Julian Dunkley's three-pointer with 2:05 left to play put Maine up for good and the Black Bears converted four straight free throws in the final 18 seconds to knock off two-time defending America East men's basketball champion University of Delaware 72-68 Sunday at Alfond Arena. Maine (10-3, 2-0 America East), which overcame a nine-point halftime deficit, won its fifth straight game and took over first place in the America East standings as forward Nate Fox scored 20 points, including 12 of 13 from the line, and pulled 10 rebounds. Delaware (9-3, 1-1), coming off an 89-77 loss at No. 5 Arizona Thursday night after a 10-point win over Alabama at the Fiesta Bowl Classic, lost its second straight. The Hens, who had won three straight at Alfond, played under associate head coach Sean Kearney who took over the reigns with head coach Mike Brey home with the flu. Brey is expected to be on the sidelines when the team travels to New Hampshire Tuesday night. "I felt good about our start, especially on defense," said Kearney, who saw the Hens jump out to an 11-2 lead which resulted in a 42-33 halftime cushion. "We kind of fell apart defensively a few times in the second, half and they got some easy tip-ins. We shot well in the first half (16 of 24 from the field) but couldn't continue it in the second. Maine played some tough defense and we didn't get a whole lot of second shots." Mike Pegues led Delaware with 20 points while Kestutis Marciulionis added 13 points and Billy Wells came off the bench to score 11. Senior All- America East guard John Gordon saw his first action of the season due to a fractured foot suffered in a pre-season exhibition game but did not take a shot in six minutes of action. Dunkley finished with 10 points while Andy Bedard added 10 points and seven assists. Maine was 19 of 22 from the foul line while the Hens connected on just 11 of 17. Maine also held a 35-27 advantage on the boards. After Delaware led by as much as 14 points early in the second stanza, Maine rallied to tie the game at 48-48 with 15 minutes left to play. The game featured five more ties, the last at 65-65 with 3:36 left to play. Delaware's Pegues hit one of two free throws with 3:17 to put the Hens up 66-65, but Dunkley nailed his key three-pointer right after a Black Bear timeout for what proved to be the game clincher.
