NEWARK, DE -- The University of Delaware men's basketball team got the 1999-2000 exhibition season off to a flying start Tuesday night as all five starters scored in double figures in a 90-82 victory over the Nantucket Nectars Naturals at the Bob Carpenter Center.

Senior forward Mike Pegues, the 1999 America East Player of the Year, led the way for the Blue Hens with 25 points and six rebounds while Darryl Presley had 15 points and a team-high nine rebounds and John Gordon had 15 points and 11 assists. Kestutis Marciulionis had 14 points, including four three-pointers, and Billy Wells, a transfer from Tulane, added 11 points.

The Hens, coming off back to back America East tournament titles and NCAA Tournament appearances, committed just 11 turnovers and hit on 10 of 19 three-pointers.

Nantucket, a touring amateur team made up of former collegiate standouts, got 18 points each from forwards Brian Gilgeous (American), Darryl Prue (West Virginia), and guard Nii Nelson Richards (St. Bonaventure).

Nantucket led early, going up by as much as seven points at 19-12 with 13:49 left in the first half. But the Hens went on a 13-0 run to go up 25-19 with 9:04 left and led the rest of the way.

Nantucket cut the Delaware lead to five points at 81-76 with 2:48 left on a layup by Gilgeous, but the Hens responded with two free throws from Gordon and a jumper by Mike Pegues and cruised to the victory.

Delaware will play its second of two exhibitions Nov. 8 vs. Athletes in Action.
