Hot-Shooting Huskies Cool Down Blue Hens

BOSTON -- Northeastern shot a blistering 56 percent from the field for the game, converting 20 of 25 shots in the second half, to post a 90-76 upset over the University of Delaware in America East men's basketball action Sunday at Cabot Gym.

The Huskies (3-11, 2-4 America East) snapped a six-game losing streak as the backcourt tandem of Jean Bain and Marcus Blossom was red-hot. Bain hit on 8 of 13 shots from the field and finished with a career-high 24 points while Blossom was 8 for 11 and finished with 21 points. Forward Toby Brittain chipped in with 17 points for the Huskies, who hit on 34 of 61 shots from the field, including 7 of 10 from the three-point line.

Northeastern's 58-second half points was the most ever scored by an opponent in head coach Mike Brey's five-year tenure at Delaware.

Delaware (13-4, 5-2), the two-time defending America East champions, had a four-game winning streak snapped despite 20 points, 13 rebounds, and six assists from senior forward Mike Pegues. Freshman guard Austen Rowland came off the bench to score a career-high 15 points and senior guard Kestutis Marciulionis added 15.

"I give Northeastern credit, they played great," said Brey, whose team lost to the Huskies for just the second time in nine games in his tenure with the Blue Hens. "We played tired and they were ready for us just like everyone else is in the conference. They made some big shots. We got frustrated when some of our shots didn't fall in the first half and we hung our heads. We made a valiant effort to come back but fell short."

The Hens shot just 39.7 percent from the field for the game, including 7 of 33 from the three-point line. Marciulionis hit just 3 of 10 shots from the field while fellow guard John Gordon was 2 for 13, including 2 for 12 from the three-point line. He finished with six points before fouling out.

Delaware was hurt by a nine-minute field goal drought in the first half that culminated in a 32-24 deficit heading into intermission. Pegues attempted just two shots in the opening stanza and had two points. The Hens converted just 8 of 24 first half shots.

After leading by eight at the half, Northeastern broke out of the gates in the second half, upping the lead to 18 points at 51-33 with a 19-9 run. The Hens cut the Husky lead to 10 points at 70-60 with 5:06 left but could never get closer as Northeastern sizzled from the field.

The Hens will return to action next Saturday, Jan. 22 when they host America East foe Towson at 7:30 p.m. at the Bob Carpenter Center.
