Pegues' 23 Points Lead Blue Hens to America East Victory over Huskies
NEWARK, DE -- Senior forward Mike Pegues recorded his fourth straight 20-point effort with 23 points and added a team-high eight rebounds to lead the University of Delaware to an 80-64 America East men's basketball victory over Northeastern Saturday night at the Bob Carpenter Center. The Blue Hens (18-6, 10-4) won their second straight and remained in sole possession of third place in the league standings, avenging a 90-76 loss to Northeastern in January. Northeastern (5-17, 3-10) got 17 points from guard Marcus Blossom and 15 points from forward Toby Brittain in the losing effort. Pegues, who had scored 25 points in three straight games, hit on 10 of 15 shots from the field to lead the Blue Hens. The 1999 America East Player of the Year and Delaware's all-time leading scorer enjoyed his 17th straight double-figure scoring effort and hit for 20 or more points for the 38th time in his career. Delaware senior guard John Gordon hit on five of eight three- pointers and finished with 17 points while senior forward Madou Diouf contributed 16 points off the bench and Greg Miller added 10 points off the bench. Miller set a school record with his 35th consecutive free throw made late in the second half. Delaware, which shot 51 percent from the field for the game (26 of 51), overcame a sluggish start to the second half, going the first 7:20 of the stanza without a field goal. Northeastern, which had trailed 45-31 at halftime, took advantage of the drought and pulled to within 50-48 with 9:35 left to play on a Blossom jumper. But Pegues responded with five straight points to put the Hens up 55-48 with 8:48 remaining and the Huskies never got closer than five points the rest of the way. Delaware had taken the 14-point first half after breaking away from a 29-29 tie with a 14-0 run late in the half.
