Delaware advances in America East Tourney with 79-69 win

March 4, 2000

NEWARK, DE -- Behind 32 points by senior Mike Pegues, the No. 3 seeded University of Delaware eliminated No. 6 Towson, 79-69, in America East Quarterfinal action Saturday night in front of a Bob Carpenter Center record crowd of 5,267.

The win marked the ninth straight over the Tigers. Delaware has eliminated Towson each of the last three America East Tournaments in the quarterfinal round.

Pegues hit 14 of 23 from the field in recording his 12th career 30-point game. Delaware is now 11-1 when Pegues scores 30 points in a game.

Delaware jumped out to a 38-25 lead at halftime as Pegues scored 18 points and grabbed seven of his 13 rebounds.

Towson rallied to within eight points at 50-42 with 11:20 remaining on Brian Barber's dunk. After a three-pointer by Kesutis Marciulionis to put Delaware back up by 11, Towson's Mike Shin hit a jumper and Josh Davalli knocked down a three-pointer to cut the lead to 53-47.

However, Delaware scored the next seven points, five of them coming at the free throw line, to take a 60-47 lead with 6:38 to play. The Hens would not look back the rest of the way.

"Even though we got off to the great start, I never thought it was going to be easy because we haven't had an easy time with Towson," said Delaware coach Mike Brey. "I thought we showed a lot of poinse when the put some game presure on us, cutting it to six, getting the ball to the right people, making free thwos. I was really impressed, though, with the way we rebounded the basketball."

Delaware guard John Gordon left the game with 16 minutes remaining after aggrevating his left foot - the same one he injured earlier this season. He did not return to the game, but was cleared to play if needed. He is expected to play Sunday vs. Maine.

The Blue Hens take on the No. 2 seeded Black Bears at approximately 2:30 p.m. in Sunday's second semifinal. Top-seeded Hofstra faces No. 5 Drexel in the first game of the day beginning at 12 noon.
