Gordon, Marciulionis Key Unlikely Comeback for Blue Hens

TOWSON, MD -- The University of Delaware pulled a stunner, climbing back from an 11-point deficit with just over four minutes left to play with a game-ending 20-3 run that resulted in a thrilling 80-74 America East men's basketball victory over host Towson Saturday night at the Towson Center.

The game was played before 2,589 fans, the largest ever to see Towson play an America East foe at the Towson Center.

Senior guards Kestutis Marciulionis (team-high 16 points) and John Gordon (15 points) led the comeback with key three-pointers down the stretch that led the Blue Hens (20-6, 12-4 America East) to their fourth straight victory and eighth straight triumph over Towson. The Hens also clinched their third straight 20-win season, a school record, with the victory.

The Tigers (11-13, 7-9), who led 71-60 with 4:24 left to play after Shaun Holtz (13 points) completed a three-point play, received a big effort from forward Brian Barber who hit on 11 of 14 shots from the field and finished with 27 points and eight rebounds. Damon Cason added 14 points, including four three-pointers, and dished out nine assists. Towson did not score a field goal in the final 4:24 and scored just three points in the final 3:20 as the Hens closed with a 20-3 run.

Mike Pegues added 15 points and a team-high seven rebounds for the Blue Hens while Greg Miller came off the bench to add nine points, including a perfect 6 for 6 from the line that upped his season total from the charity stripe to 40 for 40. Miller's 42 straight free throws made since last season ties the America East record set by Vermont's Eddie Benton.

After Holtz' three-point play put Towson up 71-60 with 4:24 left, the Hens took over thanks to a full court press, causing several Tiger turnovers. Marciulionis hit a three-pointer and followed with two free throws, Pegues added two free throws, and Gordon nailed back to back three-pointers to pull Delaware to within 74-73 with 1:44 left.

The Hens took the lead for good when Miller, who was fouled after a steal, nailed two free throws with 1:20 left to put Delaware up 75-74. Billy Wells converted two more free throws 29 seconds later and Miller added two more with 15 seconds left to ice the win.

Delaware got out of the gates quickly, hitting 15 of their first 19 shots from the field on the way to a 41-39 halftime lead. But Towson, which shot 13 of 26 in the first half, scored the first six points of the second stanza to take the lead at 45-41. Except for a 53-53 tie with 10:38 left, Towson led the rest of the way until the final minutes.
