Delaware 79, Vermont 71 (OT)

December 11, 1999

NEWARK, DE -- The University of Delaware overcame two 10-point deficits in the second half to send the game into overtime and scored the first six points of the extra session to capture a wild 79-71 men's basketball victory over Vermont in the America East conference opener for both teams Saturday afternoon at the Bob Carpenter Center.

Delaware (7-1, 1-0), which won its third straight game, has now won 12 straight home games and 11 straight conference home openers. Vermont fell to 2-5 (0-1) and almost posted its first victory ever in Delaware in 16 tries. The Catamounts are now 0-12 all-time in the BCC.

Senior forward Darryl Presley came off the bench to lead five Delaware scorers in double figures with 19 points and 11 rebounds and Mike Pegues added 18 points and nine rebounds as the Hens overcame 36 percent field goal shooting by connecting on 31 of 40 free throws.

Vermont put four scorers in double figures as forward Craig Peper recorded 18 points, forward Trevor Gaines added 16 points, and guard Tobe Carberry added 11 rebounds and 15 points, including a three-pointer with 2.3 seconds left that sent the game into overtime.

Delaware led 27-25 at halftime but Vermont used a 15-3 run to open the second half to take a 40-30 lead with 13:39 left to play. But the Hens countered with a 13-2 run of its own to regain the lead at 43-42 with 9:39 left.

But the Catamounts charged back again, taking their second 10-point lead of the half at 59-49 on a dunk by Gaines with 4:30 left. Back came Delaware for a second time, forcing two ties and going up 65-62 with eight seconds left on a free throw by Kestutis Marciulionis (13 points). Carberry then sent the game into overtime with his three-pointer six seconds later.

The Hens, who have now won five straight overtime games, jumped on Vermont early in the extra session as Pegues hit two free throws, Presley nailed a jumper, and Austen Rowland converted a layup for a 71-65 lead with 2:34 left. The Catamounts never got closer than four points the rest of the way as the Hens hit their last eight free throws.
