Diouf Leads Blue
Hens to Rare Road Win at Vermont
BURLINGTON, VT -- Senior swingman
Madou Diouf came off the bench to score a career-high
20 points and pull 13 rebounds as the University of Delaware
jumped out to a big first half lead and held on for a rare
win at Patrick Gymnasium Thursday night, downing host
Vermont 74-72 in America East men's basketball
action.
The Hens, who won at Vermont for the
first time since 1993-94 and for the first time ever under
head coach Mike Brey, clinched third place in the
America East standings with the win, which improved Delaware
to 21-6, 13-4. Mike Pegues led the Hens with 24
points and John Gordon chipped in with 16 points,
including four three- pointers, as Delaware won its fifth
straight game.
Vermont, which lost for just the second
time at home in league play this season, fell to 15-11, 10-7
despite 31 points from swingman Tony Orciari and 12 points
each from Toby Carberry and Trevor Gaines.
Gaines pulled a team-high 11 rebounds,
Carberry dished out eight assists, and Orciari nailed six of
eight three-pointers. Overall, the Catamounts were 10 of 15
from beyond the three-point line.
The game looked like a runaway from the
outset as the Hens jumped out to leads of 25-8 with 11:32
left in the first half and 40-14 with five minutes remaining
before halftime.
But the Catamounts refused to give up,
outscoring the Hens 10-2 to cut the halftime lead to 42-24.
Vermont kept up the momentum, outscoring the Hens 20-2 to
start the second stanza.
The Catamounts fired away for six
three-pointer during the run, including three by Orciari, to
cut the lead to 46-44 five minutes into the stanza. Vermont
used another 10-0 run five minutes later to go up 59-54 with
10:29 left to play. Overall, the Vermont run was an amazing
30-4.
Neither team led by more than three
points the rest of the way as the lead changed hands five
times. Pegues nailed two free throws and added a layup and
Diouf scored inside to give the Hens a 70-68 lead with 2:45
left.
Orciari hit one free throw to pull to
within 70-69 but Pegues followed with two free throws.
Orciari hit two more from the charity stripe to cut the lead
to 72-71 with 1:57 left.
Carberry had the chance to give the
Catamounts the lead with 15 seconds left but his jumper
missed and Diouf grabbed the rebound and was fouled. The
Senegal native sank two free throws for what proved to the
game winner with 11 seconds left.
Orciari went to the line with three
seconds left and hit one free throw but intentionally missed
the second. The rebound was tapped around several times
before going out of bounds as the horn sounded.
