Blue Hen Comeback Falls Short in NIT First Round Loss

VILLANOVA, PA -- The University of Delaware's first appearance in the National Invitational Tournament was full of ups and downs.

But in the end, it was Villanova that used its inside strength to muscle out a 72-63 victory to end one of the finest seasons in Blue Hen men's basketball history.

Delaware, down by 13 at halftime and by as much as 25 points early in the second half, had a frantic rally fall just short.

Villanova (20-12), a member of the Big East, got 16 points and 16 rebounds from Malik Allen, 18 points from guard Gary Buchanan, and 14 points and 11 rebounds from Brooks Sales to post the victory.

Delaware (24-8), whose 24 wins marks the third highest win total in school history, got team highs of 24 points and 10 rebounds from senior forward Mike Pegues (DeMatha/Forestville, MD), 12 points from John Gordon, and 11 points and seven rebounds off the bench from senior Madou Diouf. Pegues, a three-time All-America East selection and Delaware's all-time leading scorer, finished his career with 2,030 points, ranking him fifth on the all-time America East list. Gordon converted 2 of 8 three-pointers, marking the 20th straight game that he hit at least one trey.

The Blue Hens jumped out to an 8-2 lead but Villanova climbed back and took its first lead at 19-18 with 10:07 left before half. The teams played evenly until late in the stanza when Villanova broke a 27-27 tie by scoring the last 13 points of the half to go into intermission up 40-27.

The momentum didn't end there for the Wildcats as they outscored the Hens 14-2 to open the second half to build a seemingly safe 54-29 advantage. During the 27-2 run, the Wildcats held Delaware to just 1 of 16 shooting from the field.

But Delaware, as it had done all season, refused to give in. The Hens climbed back slowly, using a 16-3 run to cut the lead to 57-45. But another UD drought, this one that saw the Hens score just one point in a span of seven possessions, helped Villanova go back up by 16 points.

But the Hens had one last run in them and used a 12-0 spurt to eventually cut the Villanova lead to 63-59 on a Diouf layup with 2:07 left to play. But that was as close as the Hens would get as Villanova converted 7 of 10 free throws down the stretch to ice the victory and earn an NIT second round matchup with either Rutgers or Kent.
