CHARLESTON, SC -- Center Jody
Lumpkin scored eight points in overtime, including six in
the final two minutes, as host College of Charleston held
off the University of Delaware men's basketball team for an
80-75 victory in the championship game of the State Farm
Good Neighbor Classic Thursday night at Kresse
Arena.
Lumpkin scored 24 points, pulled seven
rebounds, and blocked seven shots as the Cougars (8-1) won
their tournament for second time in three years over the
Blue Hens. Delaware (5-6) got a team-high 17 points from
sophomore guard Austen Rowland while sophomore
forward Maurice Sessoms added a career-high 16
points, Ryan Iversen scored 15 points, and Ajmal
Basit added 13 points and pulled a team-high nine
rebounds. The Cougars have lost just nine games in 11 years
at home.
Delaware took its last lead of the game
at 74-73 on a Rowland layup with 2:08 left in overtime but
Lumpkin followed with two consecutive jumpers to put the
Cougars up 76-73 with 1:05 left to play. The Hens almost
tied the game, but Sessoms had a foot on the three-point
line on a successful jumper with 40 seconds left to cut the
Charleston lead to 76-75.
Leighton Bowie, who scored 23 points,
followed with two free throws with 11.7 seconds left to up
the Cougar lead to 78-75, but the Hens could not convert on
their next trip down the floor as Rowland was short on a
deep three-pointer. Lumpkin grabbed the rebound, was fouled,
then converted two free throws with 3.3 seconds left to ice
the game.
"I thought we played very well, well
enough to win," said Delaware head coach David
Henderson, whose team was looking top avenge an 80-55
loss to College of Charleston in the 1998 Charleston
Tournament title game. "I'm proud of the way we competed
down here and gave ourselves a chance to win. Our guys
played their hearts out, we just came up a little short. We
just didn't execute at the end of regulation and couldn't
make a basket when we needed to."
Sessoms connected on an 18-footer with 57
seconds left in regulation to put the Hens up 69-67, but
Troy Wheless (13 points, 7 assists) hit two free throws to
knot the game at 69-69 with 36 seconds left. The Hens had a
last chance to win the game in regulation, but after two
timeouts Billy Wells (11 points) could not get a shot
off in the lane before the shot clock expired, sending the
game into the extra session.
Delaware led by as much as 10 points at
one point in the first half before College of Charleston
used a 19-6 run to eventually send the game into
intermission tied at 41-41.
Basit and Rowland were named to the
All-Tournament team and were joined by Bowie and Lumpkin.
Jacksonville (Ala.) State won the consolation game
81-68.
Delaware will return to action next
Saturday, Dec. 30, when the Hens travel to Philadelphia to
take on St. Joseph's in a game to be televised live at 7
p.m. on CN8.
