State Farm Good Neighbor Classic at
Charleston • 1st Round Blue Hens Jump Out Early, Shoot Straight in Win
CHARLESTON, SC -- Hot-shooting University of Delaware jumped out to a 17-5 lead and never looked back to post an 82-63 men's basketball win over Charleston Southern in the opening round of the State Farm Good Neighbor Classic Wednesday night at the College of Charleston's Kresse Arena. The Blue Hens, who won their second straight, improved to 5-5 as sophomore guard Austen Rowland led four scorers in double figures with 21 points. Delaware will take on host College of Charleston Thursday at 8 p.m. in the championship game. Charleston downed Jacksonville (Ala.) State 68-57 in the other first round game Wednesday. Senior forward Ajmal Basit added 16 points, 10 rebounds, and a team-high five assists while Greg Miller added 14 points and four three-pointers and Ryan Iversen came off the bench to deliver 16 points with four three-pointers. Delaware connected on 11 of 23 shots from the three-point line for the game and shot 51.9 percent overall (28 of 54) from the field. Charleston Southern (1-7) lost its second straight game despite 12 points from forward Ivica Perica and 11 points from Gene Granger. The Buccaneers were outrebounded 37-24. "We really game down here ready to play," said Delaware rookie head coach David Henderson, whose team has now won at least one game in 18 straight in-season tournaments since the 1984-85 season. "We were focused and that was really important for us. We moved the ball around well early and really showed some unselfish play. We are showing the willingness to work with each other and that has been the key." Backed by three dunks by Basit in the opening minutes, the Hens jumped out to a 17-5 cushion with 15:42 left to play in the first half and eventually took a 46-32 lead into halftime after shooting 18 of 32 from the field (56.3 percent) in the opening session. Basit and Miller each scored 12 points in the first half with Miller connecting on all four of this three-pointers. Charleston Southern cut the Blue Hen lead to 12 points at 51-39 four minutes into the second half but Basit followed with a layup and Iversen nailed a three-pointer and CSU never got closer.
