PHILADELPHIA -- Drexel University
set an NCAA Division I record for three-point shooting by
hitting 11 of 12 from behind the arc en route to an 82-70
America East men's basketball win Sunday
afternoon.
The Dragons (2-2, 1-0 America East) were
paced by Mike Kouser's 26 points, including 5-for-5 from
three-point range. Stephen Starks also added 20 points,
while Ashley Howard had 17 points off the bench. Howard was
3-for-3 from three-point range, including two key baskets to
end Delaware runs.
Drexel led by as many as 12 (29-17) early
in the first half, by Delaware fought back to forge a 37-37
tie on Greg Miller's baseline drive with 2:06 left
before intermission. However, a pair of free throws and a
Howard three-pointer gave Drexel a 42-37 lead at
halftime.
Drexel extended its lead to 13 with 13:21
left when Starks scored on a driving lay-up to make it
56-43. Delaware would rally again, though. Austen
Rowland's lay-up capped an 11-2 run to pull Delaware
within four, 58-54 with 6:16 to play.
Drexel extended the lead to 12 again,
though, by scoring the next eight points. Six of those
points came on a pair of three-pointers by
Kouser.
Delaware would pull close on two more
occasions. The Blue Hens got to within six the first time
and five later on, only to see Drexel pull back
away.
Delaware (2-4, 1-1 America East) got a
balanced scoring effort, led by Rowland's 14 points.
Ajmal Basit, who had a five-game double-double streak
snapped, had 12 points and nine rebounds. Ryan
Iversen added 13 points off the bench, while Billy
Wells chipped in with 12 points.
Delaware, which had won six straight over
Drexel prior to Sunday's loss, set a school-record with 37
three-point attempts in the game. The Blue Hens did connect
on 10 of those to extend their streak to 18 consecutive
games with five or more three-point field goals.
Drexel's 91.7% shooting from three-point
range broke the record of 90.9% (10-for-11) set by Duke in
1988 and equalled by Hofstra in 1993.
Delaware returns to action Thursday night
when it hosts New Hampshire in an America East contest at
the Bob Carpenter Center beginning at 7:30 p.m.
