November 25, 2000 Rowland Hits for Career-high 21 Points in Hens' Loss
FAIRFAX, VA -- Two-time Colonial Athletic Association Player of the Year George Evans scored a team-high 20 points and pulled nine rebounds and Jesse Young added a career-high 17 points as George Mason University outlasted the University of Delaware 72-65 in a non-league men's basketball game Saturday night at the Patriot Center. The Patriots (2-1) took the lead for good on a basket by Young with 4:38 left to play to go up 54-52 and were clutch at the free throw line down the stretch to post the win, their 23rd in the last 26 home games at the Patriot Center. Center Jon Larranaga hit for 14 points and a career-high 12 rebounds and connected on 7 of 9 free throws down the stretch to keep the Blue Hens at bay. Delaware (1-2), which led 33-31 at halftime, got a career-high 21 points from sophomore guard Austen Rowland, including 16 in the first half, but couldn't pull it out down the stretch. The Hens hit nine three-pointers for the game, including six in the opening half, marking the 15th straight game that the Hens have connected on at least five three-pointers. Rowland, who also had a team-high four assists, connected on five three-pointers for the Blue Hens while Ajmal Basit recorded his third straight double-double, a first for a UD player since Greg Smith in 1996-97, with 16 points and 10 rebounds despite being plagued with fouls for much of the game. Billy Wells chipped in with 11 more points for the Blue Hens. Delaware was hurt by 20 turnovers for the game, including 13 in the second half. "We played very hard," said Delaware head coach David Henderson. "We had some calls go against our bigger guys and that changed the flow of the game. We just didn't get it done down the stretch against a veteran team." Delaware held George Mason guard Erik Herring to just six points, 22 below his average for the first two games of the season.
