Basit Stars as Hens Knock off Defending Champion Hofstra in League Opener

Ajmal Basit

HEMPSTEAD, NY - What last year's veteran University of Delaware men's basketball team couldn't pull off last March, the youthful 2001 edition of the Blue Hens could.

Backed by Ajmal Basit's 24 points and 11 rebounds, the Blue Hens knocked off defending champion Hofstra 79-74 in the America East men's basketball opener for both teams Thursday evening.

Delaware (2-3, 1-0) held Hofstra to just four field goals over the final 11 minutes of play and avenged a 76-69 loss to the Pride in last March's America East championship game. In the process, the Hens snapped Hofstra's 26-game home winning streak, the third longest current streak in NCAA Division I. It was Hofstra's first loss in 11 games at the new Hofstra Arena and the team's first loss of the 2000-2001 season to fall to 4-1, 0-1.

Basit, a senior forward from Brooklyn, NY (St. Anthony's) by way of the University of Massachusetts, recorded his fifth straight double-double as he led all scorers with 24 points, pulled 11 rebounds, and dished out seven assists. He was a perfect 10 for 10 from the foul line as the Blue Hens, who entered the game as the league's worst free throw shooting team at 58 percent, connected on 22 of 26 tries.

Delaware senior guard Billy Wells chipped in with 22 points, connecting on 6 of 8 shots from the field, including 5 of 6 from the three-point line. Maurice Sessoms added 10 points for the Hens.

Jason Hernandez led Hofstra with 22 points, four assists, and four steals while fellow guard Norman Richardson added 17 points but hit on just 4 of 14 shots from the field.

Hofstra took a 38-35 halftime lead and the second half featured 10 ties, the last at 62-61 with 8:21 left to play. Neither team led by more than three until Delaware went up 67-63 on a Basit layup with 4:53 left to play.

Hofstra cut the lead to 69-67 on a Richardson three-pointer with 4:03 left, but Wells answered with a three-pointer and a free throw and the Pride never got closer. The Hens connected on their final six free throws in the last 1:21 as Wells, Basit, and Miller also hit both ends to ice the win.

Delaware, which snapped a two-game losing streak, will travel to Drexel, the pre-season No. 2 pick in the America East, for a 1 p.m. game at the Physical Education Athletic Center.
