Balanced attack boosts Blue Hens

NEWARK, DE -- Senior forward Ajmal Basit led four University of Delaware players in double figures with 13 points and 10 rebounds and the Blue Hens used a 10-0 run in the second half to pull away for a 72-57 non-league men's basketball victory over Rider Saturday night at the Bob Carpenter Center.

The Blue Hens (4-5), who won their ninth straight non-league game at home, also got 12 points each from Maurice Sessoms and Austen Rowland and a career-high 11 points off the bench from freshman guard Mike Ames, who keyed the 10-0 run with five points. Rowland added six assists.

Rider, which had won three of its last four, got 19 points and nine rebounds off the bench from forward Mario Porter and 12 points from guard Mike Scott. Rider committed just 12 turnovers but were outrebounded by a 43-33 margin and s hot just 26 percent from the field (7 of 27) in the second half.

After Delaware took a slim 32-30 halftime lead, the Broncs tied the score for the third time in the second half at 40-40 with 13:42 left to play on two Porter free throws. But Delaware exploded on a 10-0 run as Ames hit a three-pointer and a jumper in a one-minute span, Sessoms hit a short jumper, and Ryan Iversen (nine points, six rebounds) connected on another three-pointer to put Delaware up 52-42 with 9:24 left to play.

Rider cut the lead to five points at 55-50 with 6:40 l eft, but Delaware responded by outscoring Rider 11-2 in the next two minutes with Rowland and Greg Miller each scoring five points in the run to go up 66-52.

Basit recorded his eighth double-double in nine games this season and also recorded five of the team's seven blocked shots. The Hens shot 50 percent from the field in the second half, converting 13 of 26 shots, and were 8 of 16 from the three-point line. Ames, a freshman guard averaging just 1.9 points and 6.3 minutes a game, hit on three of four three-pointers for 11 points in 11 minutes of action.
