Iversen Keys tFourth Straight Blue Hen Victory

Ryan Iversen

NEWARK, DE -- Sophomore guard Ryan Iversen came off the bench to score 9 of his 12 points in the final two minutes of play and the University of Delaware connected on six straight free throws in the final 46 seconds as the Blue Hens held off Boston University for a 68-59 America East men's basketball victory Saturday night at the Bob Carpenter Center.

Senior center Ajmal Basit had team-highs of 17 points and 10 rebounds as the Blue Hens (9-7, 6-2) rolled to their fourth straight win and remained atop the America East standings. The Hens have now defeated Boston University (7-8, 3-4) six straight times. Jason Grochowalski came off the bench to lead the Terriers with a game-high 26 points, hitting on 9 of 12 shots from the field, including 4 of 6 from beyond the three-point line.

After hitting just 32 percent of their shots from the field in the first half (9 of 28), Delaware came out strong in the second, connecting on 14 of 26. The Hens committed just 12 turnovers and hit on 16 of 22 free throws for the game.

After a 26-26 deadlock at halftime, the Hens came out strong in the second half, converting their first four shots from the field and going up by seven points at 40-33 with 15:27 left to play. Grochowalski, who scored 17 of his points in the second stanza, led the Terrier comeback as Boston University chipped away at the lead and took its only lead of the second half at 44-43 on a Grochowalski three-pointer with 11:07 left to play.

Delaware guard Billy Wells (13 points) gave the Hens some breathing room with a conventional three-point play for a 51-46 UD lead with 8:07 left to play. After the Terriers again cut the lead to three at 55-52 with 4:05 left, Wells and Basit followed with layups and Iversen nailed a three-pointer one minute later for an eight point lead at the two-minute mark. Iversen, a first-year transfer from the University of Minnesota, then hit four straight free throws in the final 46 seconds to ice the victory.
