February 1, 2001 Basit, Wells Lead the Way as Hens Snap Drexel Win Streak
NEWARK, DE -- Senior center Ajmal Basit connected for 19 points, pulled 11 rebounds, and blocked eight shots as the University of Delaware snapped Drexel's eight-game win streak with a 68-56 America East men's basketball victory Thursday night at the Bob Carpenter Center. Basit, the national leader in NCAA Division I with 15 double-doubles this season, helped the Blue Hens (13-8, 9-3) win for the seventh time in the last eight games and down the Dragons (12-8, 9-3) for the fifth straight time at home. Delaware has now won 44 of its last 47 home games at the BCC, including a 7-1 mark this season. The win also moved Delaware and Drexel into a tie for second place in the league standings behind defending champion Hofstra (10-2) Billy Wells added 17 points, eight rebounds, and five assists for the Blue Hens, hitting 11 of 12 shots from the foul line, including eight straight in the final minute of play as Delaware held off Drexel. Greg Miller added 10 points for the Blue Hens. Drexel put four players in double figures as Stephen Starks scored 13 points and pulled nine rebounds, Joe Linderman added 13 points, and Mike Kouser and Ashley Howard each added 12 points. Starks was held seven points under his league leading scoring average while Kouser and Linderman battled foul trouble most of the night. Drexel shot just 37.5 percent from the field (21 of 56) and were outrebounded 44-32 by Delaware. Drexel jumped out to a 27-21 halftime lead, going up by as much as 10 points at one time, and holding the Blue Hens to their lowest first half point total in three seasons. Although the Hens battled back to take a 39-38 lead with 10:48 left in the game, Drexel responded with a 10-2 run and took a seven-point lead at 48-41 with 8:41 left. But Delaware followed with a pivotal 16-0 run, shutting down Drexel for almost eight minutes to put the game away. Wells gave the Hens the lead for good with a three-pointer at the 4:13 mark for a 51-48 lead and then connected on 8 of 9 in the final 1:15 of the game.
