Wells Celebrates
Senior Night in Style with 28
Points

|
NEWARK, DE -- Senior guard
Billy Wells celebrated Senior Night in a big way as
he connected on a school record eight three-pointers and
finished with a career-high 28 points to lead the University
of Delaware to a 98-72 America East men's basketball victory
over the University of Hartford Saturday night at the Bob
Carpenter Center.
Wells, a second-year transfer from
Tulane, tied a school record with five three-pointers in the
first half and added three more in the second stanza as part
of Delaware's 16 of 31 shooting from beyond the arc for the
game. Wells added three rebounds and three assists in just
26 minutes of action.
Delaware (18-9, 14-4), which played its
final regular season home game of the season, won its fifth
straight game and clinched the No. 2 seed in this weekend's
America East championship being held at Delaware.
Hartford (4-23, 1-17), which will be the
No. 10 and last seed in the tournament, lost its 15th
straight game as the Hawks shot just 35 percent (23 of 65)
from the field. Keyon Smith led the way with 22 points while
freshman Louis Bosley came off the bench to add a
career-high 17 points.
Senior forward Ajmal Basit added
17 points and a game-high 10 rebounds, his league-leading
17th double-double of the season, and sophomore guard
Austen Rowland added 16 points and dished out nine
assists for the second straight game for the Blue Hens.
Maurice Sessoms added six points and nine rebounds
while senior Greg Miller added nine
points.
Delaware shot 54 percent from the field
for the game (35 of 65) and 71.4 percent in the second half
when it hit on 20 of 28 shots from the field. It was the
second straight game that the Hens were near flawless from
the field, especially from the three-point line. In
Thursday's 91-68 win over Vermont, the Hens hit on 10 of 11
three-pointers in the second half and were 19 of 23 from the
field in the second stanza.
Wells scored 17 of his 28 points in the
first half as he hit five of Delaware's 10 three-pointers on
the way to a 45-35 lead at intermission. Hartford never got
closer than nine points the entire second half and Delaware
led by as much as 37 points at 92-55 with 3:17 left to
play.
