NEWARK, DE -- Rick Apodaca scored
a game-high 18 points and Roberto Gittens added 14 points
and eight rebounds as Hofstra University took control of the
America East standings with a 68-55 men's basketball victory
over host University of Delaware Sunday afternoon at the Bob
Carpenter Center.
Hofstra (18-4, 11-2), the defending
America East champion, won its 10th straight game and moved
two games ahead of Delaware (13-9, 9-4) in the league
standings, avenging a 79-74 setback to the Blue Hens Nov. 30
in Hempstead, NY.
Delaware, which had won seven of its last
eight games, lost for just the fourth time in the last 48
home games at the Bob Carpenter Center and lost to an
opponent other than Maine for the first since a loss to
Hartford Jan. 16, 1998. Hofstra, which also got 11 points
from swingman Norman Richardson and 10 more off the bench
from Lars Grubler, defeated the Blue Hens at the BCC for the
first time after eight straight losses.
Ajmal Basit led the Hens with 15
points and nine rebounds, Billy Wells added 15
points, and Greg Miller chipped in with 12 points but
Delaware suffered through a cold-shooting day, hitting on
just 19 of 53 shots for the game (.358) and just 10 of 28
(.357) in the second half.
Delaware missed 11 of its first 12 shots
as Hofstra jumped out to a 14-2 lead in the first 10 minutes
of play. But the Blue Hens rallied and a carried a slim
28-25 lead into intermission.
The Pride, who shot 60 percent from the
field in the second half (15 of 25), took control early in
the second stanza and never let go. Hofstra outscored the
Hens 11-1 over the first four minutes of the second half to
go up 36-29 and never trailed again.
Delaware cut the lead to four at 38-34
with 14:27 left, but Grubler answered with a dunk and then
scored inside 36 seconds later to give the Pride some
breathing room. The Hens never got closer than eight points
in the final 13:31 of the game.
