Pride Downs Blue Hens in Title Game for Second Straight Year

Senior Greg Miller scored a team-high 17 points and was named to the All-Tournament team

HEMPSTEAD, NY -- For the second straight year, Hofstra University has dashed the University of Delaware's hopes for an NCAA Tournament appearance.

The No. 1 seed Pride got a game-high 20 points from league Player of the Year Norman Richardson and forward Roberto Gittens scored 14 of his 17 points in the second half as Hofstra held off the Blue Hens 68-54 to capture its second straight America East men's basketball title and second straight NCAA Tournament berth Saturday afternoon at Hofstra Arena.

The No. 2 seed Blue Hens, who lost to Hofstra in last year's championship game by a 76-69 score, had a seven-game win streak snapped to fall to 20-10 on the season. Delaware will hold out hopes for a second straight bid to the National Invitational Tournament, which will announce its 32-team field Sunday evening following the NCAA Tournament bracket announcement.

Senior guard Greg Miller led the Blue Hens with 17 points while senior forward Ajmal Basit recorded his 18th double-double of the season with 10 points and 11 rebounds despite foul trouble the entire afternoon. The Hens shot just 31.7 percent from the field for the game (19-6) and their trademark three-point shooting was off, hitting just 3 of 21 shots from beyond the arc for the game. Delaware senior guard Billy Wells, who was red-hot from the three-point line in the Hens' first two tournament wins, hit just 3 of 15 shots from the field and 2 of 7 from beyond the three-point arc and finished with eight points.

Hofstra, whose 18-game winning streak is tops among all NCAA Division I teams, took a 31-27 lead at halftime and stayed in front the rest of the way. Delaware stayed close the entire second half and cut the lead to 58-54 on a Miller layup with 3:46. But the Hens would not score again.

Hofstra senior guard Jason Hernandez (seven points, five assists) nailed a fallaway jumper just before the shot clock expired with 3:06 left to put the Pride up by six at 60-54 then came back with another jumper less than a minute later for a 62-54 lead. The Pride iced the game by connecting on six free throws in the final 1:17.

Wells and Miller were named to the All-Tournament team.
