January 27, 2001 Big First Half Runs Help Maine End Blue Hen Win Streak
ORONO, ME -- The University of Maine put together runs of 18-0 and 16-2 in the first half and cruised to an 80-68 America East men's basketball victory over the University of Delaware Saturday night at Alfond Arena, snapping the Blue Hens' seven-game win streak. Julian Dunkley led the Black Bears (14-6, 7-4 America East) with a game-high 29 points as he scored 14 points during a seven-minute segment in the second half to keep the Blue Hens at arm's length. Delaware (12-8, 8-3) lost for the first time since Dec. 30 when the Hens dropped a 72-67 setback at St. Joseph's. Maine swept the season series vs. the Blue Hens. Delaware shot 52 percent from the field (29 of 56) but was hurt by 17 turnovers, including 13 in the opening half. Sophomore forward Maurice Sessoms led the Blue Hens with 17 points while Ajmal Basit added 16 points and four assists, Billy Wells scored 10 points and Ryan Iversen came off the bench to pull 10 rebounds. Delaware connected on just 4 of 17 three-pointers and had a streak of 35 straight games with at least five three-pointers made snapped. "You have to give Maine credit, they played very well tonight," said Delaware head coach David Henderson. "They hit their shots early and had two big runs and that got us down. We had to keep fighting, but when they came back with another big run, it took some wind out of us. They just kept coming." Dunkley, coming off a 35-point effort vs. Towson Thursday night, hit on 10 of 16 shots from the field, including four three-pointers, to go with four rebounds for Maine. Errick Greene added 17 points and six rebounds and Derrick Jackson added 10 points. Delaware took a quick 6-2 lead in the game but Maine reeled off 18 straight points, holding the Hens scoreless for over five minutes to take a 20-6 lead. Later in the half, Maine outscored the Hens 16-2 run in another five minute span to take a 43-31 lead into intermission. The Hens fought back to cut the lead to 45-40 four minutes into the second half, but back came Maine once again with a 12-3 run fueled by Dunkley's eight points.
