Basit, Wells Lead Hens to Overtime Victory

Ajmal Basit notched his 16th double-double of the season

BOSTON -- Senior forward Ajmal Basit recorded his 16th double-double of the season with a game-high 21 points and 12 rebounds, and guard Billy Wells hit all three of his three-point attempts as the Blue Hens held off Northeastern, 81-77, in overtime at Solomon Court in Boston Thursday night.

Wells hit his biggest three in overtime with 1:52 to play to put the Hens up for good, 75-73. Sophomore Austen Rowland had a steal and a lay-up 20 seconds later to increase the lead to four, and the Huskies never got closer.

Delaware (14-9, 10-4) trailed by as much as nine in the first half, but rallied to cut the deficit to 31-29 at the half. The Blue Hens took their first lead since early in the first half on a Wells three just two minutes into the second stanza to go up 35-33.

Delaware extended its lead to 52-45, but Northeastern (5-17, 4-9) went on a 9-2 run to tie the game at 54 with 8:03 to play. The game then went back and forth, with neither team able to get more than a two-point lead.

The Hens had a 68-66 lead and possession of the ball with 40 seconds left, but Ryan Iversen, who finished with 14 points, missed a lay-up, and Marcus Blossom scored to tie the game. Iversen then had his shot blocked by Tyrone Hammick, and Northeastern missed a desparation shot at the buzzer to send the game to the extra session, the Hens' second overtime game of the season.

Basit, playing in his first game in Massachusetts since transferring from UMass, hit six of nine shots from the field and nine of 14 from the line, and added three blocks. Basit is now tied for the Division I lead in double-doubles with Reggie Evans of Iowa.

Blossom and Charles Cranford led Northeastern with 19 points apiece, and Hammick grabbed a game-high 13 rebounds. The Huskies outrebounded the Hens, 47-42, and recorded 25 offensive boards.

Both teams struggled from behind the arc. Delaware hit just four of 15 three-point attempts, while the Huskies were three of 20 from the arc.

Delaware will look to sweep the Boston trip Saturday at 1 p.m., when the Hens face Boston University at Case Gym.
