Basit Nets Career-High 25, Hens Use 16-2 Run to Down Huskies

Ajmal Basit

NEWARK, DE -- Senior forward Ajmal Basit hit on 12 of 16 shots from the field to finish with a career-high 25 points and the University of Delaware broke a tie game with a 16-2 run early in the second half as the Blue Hens ran past Northeastern 71-54 in an America East men's basketball game Thursday night at the Bob Carpenter Center.

The Blue Hens (8-7, 5-2), who took over sole possession of first place in the league standings, won their third straight game and downed Northeastern for the eighth straight time at home. The Huskies fell to 2-11, 1-4 despite a team-high 21 points and eight rebounds from forward Tyrone Hammick. Marcus Blossom added 13 points but left the game midway through the second half with a concussion when he collided with teammate Jean Francois diving for a loose ball.

Basit, a first-year transfer from Massachusetts, surpassed his previous career high by one point as he hit on 12 of 16 shots, including five dunks, while also pulling 13 rebounds and blocking four shots. Freshman guard Mike Ames came off the bench to score 12 points while Billy Wells added 10 points. Ryan Iversen, making his first start of the season in place of Austen Rowland (flu), dished out six assists and had five steals.

Delaware led by just three points at 37-34 at halftime and the Huskies knotted the score at 39-39 with 18:34 left to play. But the Blue Hens embarked on a 16-2 run, led by seven points from Basit, and took control at 55-41 with 12:11 left to play. The Huskies, who did not score for over six minutes during the drought, never got closer than 11 points the rest of the way.

The Hens overcame 23 turnovers by outrebounding the Huskies 40-28 and shooting 50 percent from the field for the game (26 of 52), including 12 of 21 in the second half. Northeastern connected on just 9 of 31 second half shots from the field (.290). Delaware also hit on 7 of 16 three-pointers, hitting five or more for the current NCAA Division I leading 27th straight game.
