NEWARK, DE -- Senior guard
Billy Wells scored a game-high 23 points and
sophomore Ryan Iversen came off the bench to add a
career-high 20 points as the University of Delaware posted
the most lopsided victory in America East Men's Basketball
Tournament history with a 110-66 semifinal win over
Northeastern Sunday at the Bob Carpenter Center.
No. 2 seed Delaware (20-9), which won its
seventh straight game and reached 20 wins for the fourth
straight year, advances to the America East championship
game for the fourth straight year. No. 1 seed and defending
conference champion Hofstra will host Delaware next
Saturday, March 10 in Hempstead, NY at 11:30 a.m. in a
rematch of last year's title game won by the Pride. Hofstra
(25-4) advanced with a 78-66 semifinal victory over No. 4
seed Maine.
Delaware, which won its 10th straight
home playoff game over four seasons, won for the 14th time
in its last 16 outings this season. All 12 Delaware players
scored at least three points led by Wells, who had 15 of his
23 in the first half, and Iversen, who tallied 11 of his 20
in the first stanza. Freshman guard Mike Ames came
off the bench to score 12 points while Maurice Sessoms
had 11 points and Ajmal Basit added nine points
and eight rebounds.
Northeastern (10-19), the No. 6 seed in
the tournament, got 20 points from forward Ricky Cranford,
13 points from forward Jean Francois, and 12 more from
forward Tyrone Hammick. The Huskies were trying to become
the first No. 6 seed ever to advance to the America East
finals.
Delaware was deadly from the field all
day, hitting on 34 of 56 shots from the field (.607) and
converting 13 of 20 three-pointers. It marked the 10th time
this season that the Hens have connected for 10 or more
three-pointers in a game. Iversen, who also dished out five
of Delaware's 22 assists, converted four of five
three-pointers while Wells nailed three of four from beyond
the arc. The Hens also hit on 29 of 36 free throws as
Northeastern was whistled for 28 fouls.
"We wanted to go inside to our big guys
since we had a size advantage today and they came through,"
said Delaware first-year head coach David Henderson. "Our
bench has performed well all season long so we felt
comfortable using a lot of people. We are happy to be going
to the championship game."
"I thought they played about as well as
they could play and Wells was great," said Northeastern head
coach Rudy Keeling. "They were great offensively. .We never
got any easy baskets. Everything was bump and grind and were
out of sync."
The Hens led from start to finish but
were up just 20-17 with 10:05 left to play in the opening
half. But a 13-4 flurry put the Hens up 33-21 and lead was
double digits the rest of the way as the Hens outscored the
Huskies 64-36 in the second half. The 64 points was the
third highest scoring total ever for the Blue Hens and the
110 points was the sixth highest game total in UD history
and the most since scoring 111 in a 113-11 overtime loss to
New Hampshire in 1995.
