Blue Hens Build Big Halftime Lead, Hold On for Victory 


Austen Rowland Scored 16 First Half Points

TOWSON, MD -- The University of Delaware built up an 18-point halftime lead before holding off host Towson University for a 67-64 America East men's basketball victory Saturday night at the Towson Center.

The Blue Hens (11-7, 7-2 America East) won their sixth straight game and took a half-game lead in the America East standings while Towson (9-9, 5-4) had a seven-game win streak at the Towson Center snapped. The Blue Hens downed the Tigers for the 10th straight time.

Austen Rowland led the Blue Hens as he scored 16 of his team-high 17 points in the opening half as the Blue Hens built a 46-28 cushion at intermission. Ajmal Basit, playing in foul trouble the entire night, scored 14 points and pulled six rebounds before fouling out with 3:26 left to play. Billy Wells also scored 10 points and came up with a big defensive play in the final seconds.

Towson got double figure scoring from four players as Brian Barber had 17 points and pulled 10 rebounds while Shaun Holtz scored added 15 points and seven rebounds, Brian Allen scored 14 points, and Tamir Goodman added 12 points and eight assists. Forward Sam Sutton, coming off a 30-point effort vs. Northeastern, hit just 1 of 5 shots from the field and finished with six points.

After Delaware stormed out to the big halftime lead, Towson made a run of its own to open the second half as the Tigers outscored the Hens 17-2 to pull to within 48-45 with 14:37 left to play. Delaware missed 9 of its first 10 shots of the second stanza.

Towson never held the lead on its own, but did tie the score at 52-52 with 10:46 left to play. But Delaware's Robin Wentt followed with a field goal and Wells nailed a three-pointer to put the Hens back up.

The Tigers cut the lead to 65-64 with 1:51 left on a Barber field goal, but Towson would not score again. Rowland hit a free throw with 1:26 left for a 66-64 lead. The Hens then got a big break when Wells tied up Holtz with a big defensive effort with seven seconds left with the possession arrow favoring the Hens. Delaware's Greg Miller was fouled and hit one free throw for a 67-64 lead with six seconds left. Towson had one last chance, but Sutton's deep three-pointer from the left wing hit the front of the rim and bounced away.
