NEWARK, DE -- The University of
Delaware men's basketball squad moved one step closer to its
third America East men's basketball title in four years as
senior guard Billy Wells led the way with 19 points
in a 66-51 victory over Towson Saturday night in an America
East quarterfinal game at the Bob Carpenter
Center.
The Blue Hens, the tournament No. 2 seed,
improved to 19-9 and will face either No. 3 Drexel or No. 6
Northeastern in the America East semifinals Sunday at 2:37
p.m. Delaware won its ninth straight America East playoff
game at the BCC and advanced to the semifinals for the
fourth straight year.
Delaware, which knocked the No. 7 seed
Tigers out of the tournament for the fourth straight year,
also defeated Towson for the 12th straight time overall.
Wells, a third team All-America East selection, connected on
just 6 of 16 shots from the field but hit three
three-pointers and also dished out four assists.
"I thought we were really ready to play
tonight," said Delaware rookie head coach David
Henderson. "Our defense was the key as was our
rebounding. We knew they could hit the offensive glass so we
talked about that. We just did a great job of executing.
These young men have fought all season long and they still
continue to go after it."
Senior guard Greg Miller added 13
points, senior center Ajmal Basit added 12 points,
eight rebounds, and three blocks, sophomore Ryan
Iversen came off the bench to scored seven points and
pull a game-high 11 rebounds, and sophomore guard Austen
Rowland overcame a tough shooting night to dish out nine
assists for the Hens.
Towson (12-17), which advanced with a
first round win over Hartford Friday night, got 16 points,
eight rebounds, and four assists from swingman Sam Sutton
while guard Brian Allen added 10 points. Delaware held
All-America East forward Brian Barber to just six
points.
Delaware jumped out to a quick 8-2 lead
and never looked back as the Blue Hens led the entire way.
Delaware led by as much as 16 points on the way to a 34-19
halftime lead and held a double-figure advantage the rest of
the way. Towson committed 20 turnovers and shot just 36
percent from the field (17 of 47) while Delaware shot 45
percent (25 of 55).
