Wells Bombs Away as
Blue Hens Win Seventh Straight
Billy
Wells Scored 20 of his Career-High 25 Points in the
First Half
|
DURHAM, NH -- Senior guard
Billy Wells scored 20 of his career-high 25 points in
the first half and senior center Ajmal Basit took the
national lead in double-doubles with 23 points and a
career-high 17 rebounds as the University of Delaware fired
away for an 88-74 America East men's basketball victory over
host New Hampshire Thursday night at Lundholm
Gymnasium.
The Blue Hens (12-7, 8-2 America East)
remained in first place in America East as they captured
their seventh straight victory thanks to the hot shooting of
Wells. Wells connected on 20 first half points, hitting five
straight three-pointers, to stake Delaware to a 52-46 lead
at intermission.
Wells tied the UD record with five
three-pointers in a half and tied another mark by extending
his consecutive three-pointers made to eight before missing
in the second half. Overall, Delaware connected on 9 of 21
three-pointers for the game and now have hit 50 treys in its
last four meetings with New Hampshire.
The Wildcats (5-14, 4-6), employing a
system in which five new players enter the game after each
media timeout, lost their third straight game despite 16
points from forward Assane Faye and 14 points from Marcus
Bullock.
Basit, a first-year transfer from
Massachusetts, connected on 8 of 12 shots from the field and
7 of 9 from the line for 23 points and pulled a career-high
17 points for his 14th double-double of the season for
Delaware, a mark that leads all NCAA Division I players.
Austen Rowland and Ryan Iversen also chipped
in with 12 points each with Rowland dishing out eight
assists.
"We weren't hitting shots and they were
early and that got them the big lead," said Delaware head
coach David Henderson, whose seven straight wins ties
the UD record for most consecutive victories by a rookie
head coach. "Our shots finally came around and we were able
to come back. That was the difference."
Delaware has now defeated New Hampshire
seven straight times and have swept the series five times in
the last six seasons.
The Wildcats jumped out to a quick nine
point leading, going up 32-23 with 8:43 left in the first
half. Delaware took the lead 40-39 with 4:03 left on an
Iversen three-pointer and went into intermission up 52-46 as
Wells fired away with three straight three-pointers in the
final 2:10 of the stanza.
New Hampshire cut the lead to 56-52 four
minutes into the second half, but Delaware countered with 14
straight points, including five from freshman Robin Wentt,
to go up 70-52 with 11:27 left.
