Heroics Lead Blue Hens

BURLINGTON, VT -- Freshman guard
Mike Ames scored five of his career-high 11 points in
the last 30 seconds as the University of Delaware held off
Vermont, 88-85, in America East men's basketball at the
Patrick Gym on Saturday afternoon.
The game featured 12 ties and 17 lead
changes before an Ames' three-pointer deep in the corner
gave the Blue Hens (7-7 overall, 4-2 America East) an 84-80
advantage with 30 seconds left. Ames and Billy Wells
each made a pair of free throws down the stretch to hold off
yet another Vermont charge and hand the Catamounts their
fifth straight loss. Ames matched his career high of 11
points vs. Rider back on Dec. 16.
Vermont's Grant Anderson hit a layup with
two seconds left to play to cut the lead to 86-85 but Wells
followed with two free throws one second later to ice the
win. The win, coupled by Delaware's 81-53 win at Hartford
Thursday night, marked the second straight year that the
Hens have swept the difficult Hartford-Vermont road swing.
Prior to last season, the Hens had not swept the series
since 1992-93.
"This is a great win for us," said
Delaware head coach David Henderson, "This is
obviously a tough place to play. We didn't play a pretty
basketball game, but our perimeter guys did a good job most
of the day and we pulled out the win. Mike Ames did a great
job. He stepped up a like a big time player and knocked down
that big shot."
The Hens, who won their second straight
game and moved to .500 for the first time since being 5-5 on
Dec. 20, got a balanced effort as five different Blue Hens
scored in double figures and the Hens shot 51.9 percent from
the field (28 of 54). Delaware dished out assists on 22 of
its 28 baskets.
Ajmal Basit led the Hens with 19
points and seven rebounds while Austen Rowland and
Wells each scored 15 points and Ames and Maurice
Sessoms each chipped in with 11 points. Ryan Iversen
came off the bench to score eight points, pull six rebounds,
and dish out four assists.
Delaware overcame a season-high 23
turnovers by going 12-for-19 (63 percent) from three-point
range and 20-for-25 (80 percent) from the line. The Hens hit
on 6 of their 12 three-point attempts in the second half and
committed just five of those turnovers in the final 18
minutes of play.
Freshman T. J. Sorrentine led Vermont
(4-7, 1-2) with 19 points and with 10 assists and nine
rebounds, nearly became the first Catamount since 1992 to
record a 'triple-double'. Trevor Gaines added 18 points
while Vermont received a boost from a pair of unheralded
sophomores, Anderson and Corey Sullivan, who each scored 14.
Tony Orciari, held to just 11, passed Joe Calavita (UVM '89)
into fourth place on the Vermont career scoring list with
1,472 points.
