RICHMOND, VA - New conference, but
the same impressive result.
Delaware, the No. 5 seed playing in its
first ever Colonial Athletic Association Men's Basketball
Tournament game, bombed away for 11 three-pointers and
committed just five turnovers for the game as the Blue Hens
advanced with an overwhelming 85-59 quarterfinal victory
over No. 4 seed Drexel Saturday at the Richmond Coliseum.
The win, Delaware's fourth straight
post-season victory over the rival Dragons, puts the Blue
Hens into the CAA semifinals Sunday at 3:08 p.m. against top
seed UNC Wilmington (20-9), which advanced with a 78-62
quarterfinal victory over No. 9 James Madison. The
championship game will be played Monday evening.
The Blue Hens (14-15), who won their
season-high fourth straight game and won a league tournament
opener for the sixth straight season, placed five scorers in
double figures as sophomore guard Mike Ames delivered
15 points on five three-pointers, junior guard Ryan
Iversen came off the bench to add 14 points, six
rebounds, and six assists, junior guard Austen
Rowland had 13 points and five assists, freshman point
guard Mike Slattery chipped in with 11 points and a
career-high eight assists, and junior forward Dave
Hindenlang contributed 10 points and five rebounds.
Delaware matched a season-high with 24
assists while committing a season-low five turnovers, two in
the first half. The five turnovers was the lowest total for
the Hens in their last 463 games since committing just five
vs. Washington State Dec. 6, 1986. The Hens had just six
turnovers in their previous game.
Drexel, a surprise team in 2001-02 after
being picked to finish ninth in the pre-season poll, ended
its season with a record of 14-14. All-CAA center Robert
Battle led the way with 16 points and nine rebounds while
Eric Schmieder added 13 points. The Dragons shot just 36.2
percent from the field for the game (21 of 58) and made just
3 of 13 three-pointers. Drexel converted only 25.8 percent
of its second half shots from the field (8 of
31).
The teams battled closely early on as
there were six ties in the first 10 minutes of the contest
before the Blue Hens pulled away. After the Dragons cut the
UD lead to two at 31-29 with 2:38 left before intermission,
Delaware followed with a 11-4 run to end the half and take a
42-33 lead into the lockerroom. Iversen started the run with
a three-pointer and added a layup and freshman backup Calvin
Smith converted two field goals to lead the way. Hindenlang
followed a miss just before the buzzer for the nine-point
cushion.
The Dragons slowly chipped away at the
Blue Hen lead in the second half and pulled to within two
points again at 45-43 three minutes into the stanza.
Delaware sped away from there, using a 19-2 run over a span
of six minutes to put the game away. Drexel missed 11
straight field goal attempts during the run and when they
finally sank a basket, a jumper by Tim Whitworth with 10:07
left, the Hen lead was insurmountable at 66-49.
Ames, the top three-pointer shooter in
the CAA, was 5 of 8 from beyond the arc for the game and hit
three pivotal three-pointers during the run.
Delaware and UNC Wilmington split their
two meetings during the season with the Hens capturing a
65-60 win Jan. 12 in Wilmington, NC and the Seahawks winning
69-66 Feb. 16 in Newark, DE. UNC Wilmington advanced against
JMU Saturday behind the play of 2002 CAA Player of the Year
Brett Blizzard who scored 29 points and All-CAA center Craig
Callahan who added 21 points and six rebounds.
