George Mason 69, Delaware 57 February 6, 2002 Blue Hens Can't Stop Young's Inside Game in Loss to George Mason Ryan Iversen (32) goes for a rebound in a sea of George Mason defenders NEWARK, DE -- Junior forward Jesse Young powered inside for game-highs of 19 points and eight rebounds as George Mason controlled the inside game and posted a 69-57 Colonial Athletic Association men's basketball victory over host University of Delaware Wednesday night at the Bob Carpenter Center. The 6-10 Young connected on 9 of 12 shots from the field for his 19 points and fellow junior forward Jon Larranaga added 13 points as the Patriots (13-7, 7-4) won their second straight game and moved into sole possession of second place in the CAA standings. George Mason avenged an 83-56 loss to Delaware Dec. 22 in Fairfax, VA. Young scored just seven points in that outing. Delaware, coming off consecutive 75-70 wins over Virginia Commonwealth and Old Dominion, could never find their shooting touch and fell to 10-12, 6-6. Sophomore forward Sean Knitter came off the bench to lead Delaware with 12 points while sophomore guard Mike Ames added 11 points. The Hens connected on just 38.5 percent of their shots from the field for the game and were just 9 of 28 from the three-point line. George Mason used a 42-12 scoring advantage in the paint and 54.2 percent shooting from the floor (26 of 48) to do its damage. The Patriots also got nine points from forward Rob Anderson and seven each from guards Raoul Heinen and Lamar Butler. Delaware's starters managed just 26 points for the game with top inside player Maurice Sessoms being held to just four points despite a team-high seven rebounds. Delaware opened the game missing 12 of its first 15 shots from the field but battled back and tied the game several times in the opening half before George Mason took a 28-26 lead into the break. The Patriots led the entire second half, but the game stayed close until the final seven minutes when GMU ran away for the victory. Delaware had used an 8-3 run to cut the lead to one point at 49-48 with 8:22 remaining in the game, but the Patriots countered with a 12-2 run over the next seven minutes to put the game away. Young scored seven points in the run, including six inside, to lead the way. The Patriots converted eight straight free throws inside the one minute mark to ice the victory.
