Kentucky ABA 90, Delaware 85 (Exhibition) - November 7, 2001 Austen Rowland scored 21 points, including five three-pointers, for the Hens NEWARK, DE -- Forward Dave Shelton scored a game-high 25 points and forward Isaac Spencer came off the bench to add 17 points as the Kentucky Cats defeated the University of Delaware 90-85 in the Blue Hens' men's basketball exhibition opener Wednesday night at the Bob Carpenter Center. The Cats, a team comprised of former NCAA Division I players, jumped out to a six-point halftime lead and held the Blue Hens at bay, fending off several UD rallies in the closing minutes. The game was the Blue Hens' only exhibition game. Delaware will open the regular season under second year head coach David Henderson Nov. 16 vs. Wichita State in the first round of the Top of the World Classic in Fairbanks, Alaska. Delaware junior forward Maurice Sessoms and junior guard Austen Rowland each scored 21 points for the Blue Hens as four UD players scored in double figures. Junior guard Ryan Iversen netted 11 points and freshman guard Mike Slattery added 11 points in the losing cause. The Hens connected on 9 of 18 three-pointers with Rowland hitting on five of six attempts from beyond the arc. Shelton, a former standout at the University of Tulsa, hit on just 6 of 17 shots from the field but was perfect on all 11 free throw attempts and also pulled a game-high eight rebounds. Spencer (Murray State) hit on 7 of 11 shots from the field for his 17 points while center Sean Dougherty (Wisconsin) added 12 points. Guard Gary Lumpkin (Xavier), who played his high school at nearby William Penn High School, started and scored nine points while dishing three assists. Kentucky led by as much as 13 points in the first half at 31-18 before the Hens closed the gap to 43-37 at intermission. Delaware pecked away at the lead, pulling to within four points several times and eventually getting to three points at 88-85 with 19 seconds left to play on a jumper by freshman forward Mark Curry. But Shelton closed the scoring with two free throws moments later to ice the victory.
