Towson 59, Delaware 53 January 23, 2002 Towson Rallies to Down Cold-Shooting Hens Maurice Sessoms scored 16 points for the Hens NEWARK, DE -- Towson University held the University of Delaware to just one field goal over the final 10 minutes of the game to overcome a 12-point second half deficit and post a 59-53 Colonial Athletic Association men's basketball victory Wednesday night at the Bob Carpenter Center. Junior point guard Brian Allen scored a game-high 17 points, pulled eight rebounds, and dished out four assists as Towson (6-11, 2-5 CAA) snapped a two-game losing streak and defeated the Blue Hens (8-10, 4-4 CAA) for the first time since the 1996-97 season. Allen scored eight of his 17 points in the final 8:48 to spark the comeback. Maurice Sessoms led three Delaware players in doubles figures with 16 points while Vohn Hunter added 13 and Sean Knitter came off the bench to add 11 points and eight rebounds. Delaware, a longtime rival with Towson dating back to the East Coast Conference, the America East conference, and now in the first season in the CAA, had defeated Towson 12 straight times since the Tigers posted an 86-79 win Feb. 22, 1997 at the Towson Center. The Blue Hens had also defeated Towson nine straight times at home since an 85-78 Towson win March 2, 1996. The Hens are now 10-2 all-time vs. Towson at the Bob Carpenter Center. The Blue Hens, who have now lost three of their last four games, led 27-24 at halftime and used a 12-0 run in the second half to break a 35-35 tie with 14:37 left and take a 47-35 lead at the 10:24 mark. The Blue Hens hit four straight shots during the run with Hunter scoring seven of the 12 points during the span. Knitter's jumper at 10:24 gave the Hens their biggest lead but Delaware would manage just one more field goal the remainder of the game as it scored just six points over the final half of the second stanza. Towson clamped down on the Hens, who missed their next 10 shots before Hunter scored a layup with nine seconds left to cut the lead to 59-53. The Tigers put together a 17-4 run to take the lead for good at 53-51 on a conventional three-point play by Allen with 1:08 left to play. Allen then held the Blue Hens off by making three more free throws in the final 43 seconds. Both teams suffered through a tough shooting night. Delaware connected on just 21 of 58 shots from the field (.362) and was 3 of 21 from the three-point line. Towson, which held a 47-38 rebounding advantage, hit just 33.9 percent of its shots (21 of 62) from the field.
