Towson 61, Delaware 57 February 13, 2002 Goode's Late Free Throws Ice Win for Towson Mike Ames scored all of his game-high 20 points in the second half TOWSON, MD -- Towson University center Derrick Goode hit two free throws after being fouled on an offensive rebound with 22.3 seconds left to play as the Tigers defeated the University of Delaware 61-57 in a Colonial Athletic Association men's basketball contest Wednesday night at the Towson Center. Goode, a 7-1 backup who was just 12 of 21 from the line this season entering the game, rebounded a miss by Sam Sutton (13 points) with 22.3 seconds left and then calmly sank two free throws for Towson. Kerry Augustus later hit one free throw with eight seconds left to seal the victory. Goode finished 5 of 7 from the line for nine points and added seven rebounds. The Tigers, who swept the season series from Delaware for the first time since the 1986-87 season, won their third straight game to improve to 9-15, 5-9 CAA as Gerald Weatherspoon scored a team-high 14 points, including five straight late in the game that helped Towson regain the lead for good. Guard Brian Allen added 12 points, all on three-pointers, to go with a game-high seven assists. Towson is now 8-1 this season in games decided by seven points or less. "We didn't play at all in the first half," said Delaware head coach David Henderson. "They (Towson) made a huge play (by Goode) at the end. It was a mental lapse on our part and they converted. We just got nothing out of the middle tonight and we need to get more. We have to try to overcome that, but right now we are struggling." Delaware (10-14, 6-8 CAA), which got a game-high 20 points from guard Mike Ames, all in the second half, dropped its third straight game, the team's first three-game losing streak in a season since 1996-97. Ames, coming off a career-high 33-point performance vs. Drexel Saturday, hit 8 of 11 shots from the field in the second half, including four three-pointers, after missing all five shots in the opening 20 minutes. Neither team could hit the mark early as Delaware missed its first 15 shots from the field and 18 of its first 19 and Towson was 0 for its first 11. But the Hens fell behind and eventually went into halftime down 25-18. Vohn Hunter scored nine of his 16 points in the opening stanza for the Blue Hens. But Delaware battled back in the second half and took the lead several times, the last time at 54-53 with 3:01 left on a layup by Robin Wentt. Weatherspoon countered with a three-pointer and later added a layup after a steal and assist by Allen to put the Tigers up 58-54. Delaware cut the lead to 58-57 on one free throw by Wentt with 1:45 left and two by Mike Slattery with 48 seconds left, setting up Towson's game-clinching free throws by Goode. The Hens set up for a potential game-tying basket, but Hunter's three-pointer from the corner with 8.8 seconds remaining was off and Augustus rebounded.
