UNC Wilmington 69, Delaware 66 February 16, 2002 Callahan Powers League-Leading UNC Wilmington to Victory Vohn Hunter netted a career-high 22 points for the Blue Hens NEWARK, DE -- Junior center Craig Callahan scored a game-high 23 points and Brett Blizzard scored nine of 14 points in the second half as league-leading University of North Carolina Wilmington defeated host University of Delaware 69-66 in a Colonial Athletic Association men's basketball thriller Saturday night at the Bob Carpenter Center. The 6-8 Callahan hit on 9 of 14 shots from the field, including two three -pointers, pulled five rebounds, and dished out three assists as the Seahawks (18-8, 13-3 CAA) held off the Blue Hens and won for the sixth time in the last seven games. UNC Wilmington avenged a 65-60 loss to the Blue Hens in Wilmington, NC back on Jan. 12. Delaware (10-15, 6-9), which got a career-high 22 points from junior guard Vohn Hunter, lost its fourth straight game for the first time since the 1994-95 season and lost its second straight home game for the first time since November, 1997. Guards Austen Rowland and Ryan Iversen both came off the bench to add 11 points for the Hens with Iversen collecting a team-high nine rebounds. Delaware shot just 37.7 percent from the field for the game (23-61) but a second half flurry was too late to catch the Seahawks, who shot 51.1 percent for the game, including 60.9 percent (14 of 23) in the second half. UNC Wilmington held off the Hens by converting 18 of 20 shots from the free throw line, including seven in the final minute of play. Anthony Terrell added 12 points while Ed Williams chipped in with nine points and nine rebounds. UNC Wilmington jumped out to a 25-19 halftime lead and held Delaware scoreless for a span of seven minutes and 41 seconds to build a 28-19 lead. Delaware did not score its first points of the second half until Iversen converted at the 16:16 mark. The Seahawks built the lead to as much as 10 points on three different ocassions, the last time at 50-40 with 6:41 remaining, but the Hens refused to give up. Delaware regained the hot hand, using a three-pointer and jumper by Mike Ames and a three-pointer from Hunter with 5:02 left to cut the lead to 52-49. But every time the Hens tried to get closer, the Seahawks answered back. A Callahan dunk with 1:13 left built the lead to nine, and after the Hens cut it back to five on an Iversen layup, UNC Wilmington's Terrell followed with two free throws with 32 seconds left to build the lead back to seven. Delaware had the chance to cut the lead to two with 15 seconds left but a three-pointer by Rowland rimmed out and Callahan rebounded. Rowland's three-pointer with one second left created the final margin.
