WILLIAMSBURG, VA -- Sherman
River's three-point basket capped off a 12-2 second half run
to give William & Mary its first lead of the game lead
with 7:01 remaining in regulation. Reid Marham put the Tribe
up for good with 4:42 left as William & Mary notched its
first conference victory of the season dropping the
University of Delaware 59-53 Saturday evening at William
& Mary Hall.
After getting off to an anemic first-half
shooting six of 30 from the field, William & Mary (4-7,
1-1) turned it around in the second half by shooting 52
percent from the floor (13-25) to overcome a nine point
second half lead. Reid Markham led the Tribe by scoring nine
of his team-high 11 points in the final 20 minutes of the
game.
Delaware (6-6) jumped out to an early
lead and were up as much as nine points with 10:22 left to
go in the game, but William & Mary clawed back to tie
Delaware 42-42 on Nick D'Antoni's three-pointer with 7:52
remaining. From there the Tribe outscored the Blue Hens
17-11 to finish out the contest.
It was only the first time this season
and third under Head Coach David Henderson's tenure, that
the Blue Hens blew a first-half lead missing nine of their
last 13 shots. William & Mary also out rebounded the
Blue Hens 44-38 and held an overwhelming margin from the
foul line hitting on 17 of 32 shots compared to Delaware's
four of seven.
Juniors Austen Rowland and Maurice
Sessoms led Delaware with 11 points apiece, while Ryan
Iverson came off the bench to add eight points and 12
rebounds. Sophmore Mike Ames connected on a three pointer
for his only basket of the game, extending his streak of
consecutive games with a three-pointer to 12.
For Delaware, the loss ends a string of
eight consecutive conference victories dating back to last
season in the America East.
