Drexel 70, Delaware 56 February 26, 2003 Drexel's Battle Wounds the Blue Hens Maurice Sessoms scored a career-high 23 points PHILADELPHIA - Drexel center Robert Battle scored 15 of his game-high 27 points in the final seven minutes of play as the Dragons took advantage of a sluggish night for Delaware to pull away for a 70-56 Colonial Athletic Association men's basketball win Wednesday night at the Daskalaskis Center. The Blue Hens (13-13, 8-9 CAA) wasted an outstanding effort from senior forward Maurice Sessoms who hit on 11 of 15 shots from the field and finished with a career-high 23 points for his third straight outstanding effort. Sessoms also pulled six rebounds and blocked two shots. Delaware, which lost for the fifth time in the last seven games, also got 13 points from guard Mike Slattery while Ryan Iversen came off the bench to score 10 points for his 12th straight double-figure scoring effort. The Hens matched a season-high with 22 turnovers and shot just 41.8 percent from the field. Drexel, which swept the season series from the Blue Hens for the first time since the 1996-97, won its fourth straight game and its sixth in the last seven games to move into a tie with Virginia Commonwealth in the CAA standings. Battle connected on 12 of 18 shots from the field to finish with 27 points while adding four rebounds and six blocked shots, all in the first half. Phil Goss added 15 ponits and Jeremiah King helped with 11 points. "Our perimeter players just got outplayed tonight," said Delaware head coach David Henderson, who team moved into a five-way tie for fifth place in the CAA standings along with James Madison and Old Dominion. "We got rattled offensively from the start and were tentative and unsure of ourselves. We made some uncharacteristic turnovers. We got great play from Mo (Sessoms) but he needed help and we didn't get it. " Delaware fell behind early, going seven minutes without a basket while the Dragons used an 11-0 run to take a 21-11 lead with 8:27 to go before halftime. The Hens rallied, holding Drexel scoreless for the final 5:05 of the stanza and pulling to within 26-20 at the break as Sessoms hit a jumper and Slattery nailed a three-pointer during the final 1:29. Sessoms hit three straight field goals early in the second half to tie the game at 28-28, but Drexel followed quickly with a 7-0 run to take control. Sessoms answered with another field goal to cut the lead to five, but Goss nailed a three-pointer and followed with two free throws to build a double-digit lead. The Hens never got closer than eight the rest of the way. Battle, a first team All-CAA all-star a year ago, sat much of the early part of the second half due to foul trouble but exploded in the late going, scoring 15 points in the final seven minutes, including one stretch in which he scored on five straight Dragon possessions.
