Delaware 66, Eastern Washington 56 December 27, 2002 • Oneida Bingo & Casino Classic 1st Round Blue Hens Win Third Straight; Advance to Tourney Final GREEN BAY, WI -- Junior guard Mike Ames scored a season-high 27 points, including four in a pivotal 8-0 run late in the game, to lift the University of Delaware to a 66-56 men's basketball win over Eastern Washington in first round action of the Oneida Bingo and Casino Classic Friday night the Resch Center. Mike Ames scored 18 of his season-high 27 points in the first half The Blue Hens (5-3), who also got 15 points and five assists from sophomore guard Mike Slattery and another 12 points off the bench from senior forward Maurice Sessoms, won their third straight game and will now play in the championship Saturday night at 8:30 p.m. (EST) against host Wisconsin-Green Bay. UW-Green Bay was a 74-69 first round winner over Austin Peay Friday night. The consolation game will be held Saturday at 6 p.m. Delaware, which has now won at least one game in 22 straight regular season tournaments, will look to post its first tournament victory since capturing the Mt. St. Mary's (MD) Tournament in 1992-93. Eastern Washington, which got 19 points and four three-pointers from guard Alvin Snow and 12 from guard Chris Hester, fell to 7-4 on the season with its second straight loss. Eastern Washington, which hit on just 34.4 percent of its shots from the field (21 of 61) for the game.The Eagles were coming off a narrow loss to perennial NCAA Tournament participant Gonzaga this past week in a game in which they led by as much as 16 points. "This was a big win for us," said Delaware head coach David Henderson. "This is the first time I've coached a team that played zone the entire game and I thought we did a really good job doing that. We really tried to protect the paint tonight because they (EWU) have been scoring a lot inside. Our guys did a great job taking that inside game away." Delaware outrebounded Eastern Washington 42-33 and held their three inside starters to just 5 for 21 shooting from the field. Blue Hen senior forward Dave Hindenlang led the Hens inside with a career-high 10 rebounds while Sessoms added five rebounds. Ames hit on 9 of 13 shots from the field and was perfect on all seven free throws for the Blue Hens in recording his second 20-point effort of the season and sixth of his career. Led by Ames' 18 first half points on 7 of 9 field goal shooting, the Blue Hens jumped out to a 38-29 halftime lead as they shot a blistering 56.5 percent from the field, connecting on 13 of 23 shots and 10 of 14 from the line. The Hens got the lead despite a big start by Eastern Washington which led 12-2 after the first six minutes as Snow knocked down two three pointers and scored eight of the first 12 points. The Hens followed with a 14-0 run of their own, and after an EWU basket by Brendon Merritt tied it at 17-17, tacked on 12 more consecutive points and were on their way, eventually leading by as much as 11 points twice in the opening stanza. Delaware went up by as much as 12 points at 47-35 in the opening five minutes of the second half but the Eagles rallied back and cut the lead to two on a three-pointer by Snow with 7:24 left to cut the margin to 51-49. But Hindenlang followed with a layup, Sessoms connected on two free throws, and Ames followed with two free throws and a jumper as part of an 8-0 run give the Hens some breathing room at 59-49 with 3:57 left. Eastern Washington cut the gap to four at 59-55 on a three-pointer by Marc Axton, but the Hens followed with seven free throws in the final 1:15, two after a technical by Snow, to put the game away.
