Delaware 69, James Madison 54 January 4, 2003 Hens Get Back To Winning Plays with Big Win over Dukes HARRISONBURG, VA -- Delaware's starting backcourt of Mike Slattery and Mike Ames combined for 31 points and guard Ryan Iversen came off the bench to deliver 14 points as the Blue Hens broke a two-game losing streak with a 69-54 Colonial Athletic Association men's basketball victory over host James Madison Saturday night at the JMU Convocation Center. Calvin Smith had his best game of the season with 10 points and seven rebounds for the Hens The Blue Hens built a nine-point halftime lead and used 65 percent shooting from the field in the second half to cruise to the victory, their third straight over the Dukes since joining the CAA last season. James Madison, which lost its CAA opener to Drexel Thursday night, fell to 4-8 overall, 0-2 CAA. Delaware improved to 6-5, 1-1 CAA. Slattery led the Hens with 16 points while Ames contributed 15 points, including eight from the foul line. Guard Chris Williams led James Madison with 13 points and five assists while fellow guard David Fanning, the CAA's leading scorer a year ago, was held to just 10 points. Dukes forward Pat Mitchell scored 10 points and added eight rebounds off the bench but JMU could not overcome 35.1 percent shooting from the field (20 of 57) for the game. Delaware sophomore Calvin Smith came up with his best effort of the season as he hit on five of six shots from the field for 10 points and pulled seven rebounds and forward Dave Hindenlang added seven rebounds and three assists as the Blue Hens got an improved effort from their frontcourt. "Anytime you can get a win on the road in conference play, it's a nice thing," said Delaware head coach David Henderson. "We were much better inside tonight and got some outstanding play from our frontcourt, especially from Calvin Smith and Dave Hindenlang." Delaware is now 17-4 all-time in three season under Henderson when scoring 60 or more points. Despite being outrebounded 42-33, including 19-8 on the offensive boards, the Blue Hens used some hot shooting for the win. Delaware hit on 11 of 17 shots from the field in the second half, including 3 of 4 from the three-point line, to keep the Dukes away. The Hens built a 9-2 lead as James Madison hit on just one of its first eight shots from the field and committed four turnovers. But that didn't last long as the Dukes rallied and cut the lead to 9-8 with 10:49 left in the opening stanza as Mitchell scored four points and Ken Whitehead completed a slam dunk. But Whitehead was whistled for a technical foul for hanging on the rim and the Dukes wouldn't score again until almost three minutes later. Over that span, Delaware exploded with 14 straight points, including nine from Ames, to go up 23-8 with 8:20 left. The Hens were never seriously threatened again. Slattery hit a basket with just five seconds left in the opening stanza to send the Hens into intermission with a 34-25 lead. Dwayne Broyles opened the second half with a free throw for James Madison just 11 seconds into the stanza, but when Smith answered with a jumper for Delaware 13 seconds later, it gave Delaware a 10-point lead and the advantage never dipped below double figures the rest of the night. The Hens built their biggest lead of the night just minutes later when freshman Chris Prothro, who made his first career start, and Slattery nailed back to back three-pointers to give Delaware a 50-31 lead with 15:12 left to play. Delaware completed the game by hitting eight straight free throws in the final five minutes with Ames connecting on four of them. Ames hit on all eight of his shots from the foul line to extend his streak to 30 straight.
