Delaware 74, Towson 69 March 1, 2003 Iversen, Lunn Lead the Way Down the Stretch as Blue Hens Clinch No. 5 Seed in CAA David Lunn had his first career double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds TOWSON, MD - Ryan Iversen scored six of his game-high 21 points in the final 65 seconds and David Lunn posted his first career double-double as the University of Delaware held off last place Towson for a 74-69 Colonial Athletic Association men’s basketball victory in the regular season finale Saturday night at the Towson Center. The Hens, who swept the season series from the Tigers after being swept a year ago, built a seven-point halftime lead but had to overcome several second half deficits to improve to 14-13, 9-9 CAA. The win clinched fifth place for the Blue Hens in the CAA standings. Delaware will take on No. 4 seed George Mason in the CAA quarterfinals next Saturday at 12 noon in Richmond, VA. Towson, which placed four scorers in double figures paced by 18 points from guard Gerald Weatherspoon, 15 points off the bench from freshman Lawrence Hamm, and 11 points each from Tony Dixon (10 rebounds, 4 blocks) and Jamaal Gilchrist, lost its 13th straight game to finish at 4-23, 1-17. The No. 10 seed Tigers will take on No. 7 James Madison in a CAA first round game Friday in Richmond. Iversen, who had 14 of his points in the final six minutes, came off the bench and finished with 21 points on 7 of 11 shooting from the field to post his 13th straight double-figure scoring effort. Lunn added 13 points and a career-high 10 rebounds and blocked a three-point attempt by Towson’s Brian Allen that could have tied the game in the closing seconds. Maurice Sessoms chipped in with 15 points, hitting 7 of 12 free throws. Delaware’s leading scorer, guard Mike Ames, was held in check and scored just three points on 1 of 12 shooting from the field, including an 0 for 9 mark behind the three-point line. He had a streak of 21 straight games with at least one three-pointer snapped. “We are happy that we won but not happy with our performance tonight,” said Delaware head coach David Henderson, who has led the Hens to consecutive fifth place regular season finishes. “We played poorly, probably the worst we’ve played all season. We were fortunate that we didn’t get rolled over. We had a lack of concentration, missed a lot of layups and free throws. We didn’t pick up the momentum we needed heading into the tournament. Towson played with confidence and they played well enough to win. Fortunately Iversen and Lunn made some plays down the stretch for us.” Delaware jumped out to a 38-31 halftime lead but came out sluggish in the second half, missing on its first eight shots from the field and 12 of its first 14. The Tigers took advantage and got back into the game, finally taking the lead at 47-45 on a Tony Dixon layup with 11:23 left to play. The Tigers owned the lead until the final minutes when Sessoms hit a jumper and Iversen delivered a three-pointer with 2:45 left to give Delaware the lead at 65-63. Towson came back to tie the score for the fifth time on another Dixon layup, but the Hens went up for good as Mike Slattery connected on two free throws and Iversen followed with consecutive baskets for a 69-66 lead with 40 seconds left. Iversen then nailed four free throws down the stretch for the Hens. Towson had the chance to tie the game but Lunn blocked a three-point attempt by Allen with four seconds left and collected the rebound. He was fouled and converted two free throws to ice the win.
