Virginia Commonwealth 71, Delaware 66 February 15, 2003 Blue Hens Let Eight-Point Second Half Lead Slip Away Ryan Iversen hit his 100th career three-pointer and finished with 16 points RICHMOND, VA - Virginia Commonwealth guard Emanuel Mathis scored 17 of his game-high 23 points in the final seven minutes as the Rams overcame a late eight-point deficit to post a 71-66 Colonial Athletic Association men's basketball victory over the University of Delaware Saturday night at the ALLTELL Pavilion. Delaware, which overcame an eight-point second half deficit to down the Rams 55-53 last month at the Bob Carpenter Center, managed just three field goals during the final seven-minute span and saw its record fall to 12-11, 7-7 CAA. Ryan Iversen came off the bench to score a team-high 16 points and drain four of eight three-pointers, including the 100th of his career, for the Hens while Dave Lunn added 13 points and Mike Slattery chipped in with 12 points and five assists. Virginia Commonwealth, the hottest team in the CAA, won its sixth straight game to improve to 15-7 (10-4 CAA) as Mathis hit on 5 of 8 three-pointers and also pulled six rebounds to lead the way. The Rams also got 12 points from Nick George and 11 off the bench from Michael Doles. "They beat us tonight, we didn't beat ourselves," said Delaware head coach David Henderson. "We were a very good basketball team tonight and we got the kind of effort that gets you excited. Mathis made two huge shots that were not easy ones. Good players make plays and he came up big for them tonight. But I'm proud of my guys." Delaware, which led 36-33 at the half, took a 58-50 lead on an Iversen three-pointer with 7:45 left and had the chance to increase the lead to double digits when Calvin Smith missed a pair of free throws seconds later. That seemed to open the floodgates for VCU. Mathis came right back and hit a long three-pointer, followed with two free throws, added a layup, and after a basket from teammate Troy Godwin, connected on another three-pointer to give VCU the lead it would never relinquish at 62-60 with 2:56 remaining. VCU outscored the Hens 21-8 to end the game, included 17 points from Mathis. The guard hit another three-pointer with 1:34 remaining and then sealed the win with four straight free throws in the final 26 seconds. VCU held the Hens scoreless for nearly four minutes in gaining the lead. Guard Mike Ames, Delaware's leading scorer, was held to just five points, including a three-pointer at the buzzer, his only trey of the game. The Hens outrebounded VCU 44-38 with Smith and Chris Prothro each pulling eight and Iversen adding seven boards.
