Delaware 76, Drexel 64 February 28, 2004 Nana Erupts for Career-High 28 Points as Blue Hens Stop Rival Drexel Complete Statistics NEWARK, DE -- Sophomore forward Harding Nana exploded for a career-high 28 points and pulled 10 rebounds for his fourth straight double-double as the University of Delaware closed out the regular season with a 76-64 victory over rival and league-leading Drexel in Colonial Athletic Association men's basketball action Saturday night. Delaware, which improved to 16-11 (10-8) and earned the No. 6 seed for the upcoming CAA Tournament that begins Friday in Richmond, VA, jumped out to a 30-21 halftime lead and held off a late Drexel surge for the victory. The Hens hit 13 of 20 shots from the field (65 percent) in the second half and finished at 52 percent (26 of 50) for the game and held a commanding 43-29 advantage on the boards. Guard Rulon Washington came off the bench to add 11 points for the Hens while forward Robin Wentt pulled a game-high 13 rebounds and Mike Slattery (#3 at right) and senior Mike Ames, playing in his final game at home, each chipped in with 11. The Hens, who overcame 20 turnovers, defeated Drexel for the first time in the last four meetings. Drexel (18-9, 13-5 CAA), which will now be the No. 2 seed in the CAA quarterfinals behind VCU, had a three-game win streak snapped and lost for just the second time in its last 11 games. Guard Tim Whitworth kept the Dragons in the game with 22 points, including 15 in the first half when he connected on five three-pointers. Guard Jeremiah King added 15 points and a game-high eight assists. Drexel shot just 33.3 percent from the field for the game (18 of 54) and connected on just 19 of 31 free throws. Drexel led 10-8 midway through the first half before the Blue Hens charged back with a 8-2 run that put them up for good at 21-12 with 7:04 left. Washington started the spurt with a three-pointer and later added a layup for the Hens. The nine-point lead held until intermission despite the hot-shooting of Whitworth. A quick start in the second half for the Hens upped the lead to 13 points at 37-24 as Nana scored five points in the first four minutes of the half. Drexel rallied and cut the lead to five points several times, pulling to within 42-37 with 11:59 remaining on two free throws by Jermaine Miller. But back came Delaware once again to increase the lead to 15 points at 57-42 with 7:48 left thanks to a 15-5 run that started on consecutive three-pointers by Washington and Slattery and a dunk by Nana. Nana closed the run with another layup. Drexel never got closer than eight point the rest of the way.
